Alert | My boy isnt doing so well. His age is catching up with him and his cancer has spread. I think its to the point that Im keeping him around more for myself than anything and I dont want him to suffer with his illness. He struggles to get off the floor and I just see in his eyes its his time. Ive never put a dog down before. Just wondering what the humane procedure is for this. Id like to be there with him when this is done. Basically where do I go and what costs are involved? Do the vet and Humane Society use the same procedure? I heard the Humane Society is alot cheaper but I want whats best for him reguardless of cost. Will the vets do house calls for this? Thanks | | Pizzaking Wasnt a member 0 posts

Alert | I haven't had to put a pet down since living in Maricopa so I don't know if they make house for calls for such a thing. I do know that for other things I much prefer the staff/vets at Maricopa Animal Hospital over the ones at Maricopa Wells. We put our dog down in California for the same reasons you mentioned above. We were allowed to be present and say good-bye and pet him during the process, we then had him buried at a place called Bubbling Wells Pet Cemetery. I don't know if there are places like that here in Arizona?
When I put my cat down a fews ago in Gilbert we were not given that option. We took her to the emergency vet because she couldn't breathe and after about an hour decided to have them stop trying (they said she was already brain dead) and just have them put her down. We were allowed to be present and then given our choice of cremation or taking the body home to bury ourselves in the backyard...we knew we would not be in that house forever and opted for cremation and had the ashes but in a picture frame box that was all done through the cremation place. I can't remember for sure but I think it was about $200 to have her put down, cremated and the frame. There were other choices which were less expensive as far as the frames/urns were concerned.
I have never used the Humane Society so I don't know their process. For me personally, if I had to do it again, I would pay the extra money and do it at the vets (or even better if the vet would do a house call) - not to say that the Humane Society is not reputable, I think I would just prefer not to go there unless it was a last resort.
I know this is a difficult decision - good luck with whatever you choose.

Alert | | i had to put my dog down and it was the hardest thing we ever had to do. we took him to the humane society and they were so so nice about it. honestly, i think it cost like $25 or something like that. i just remember my husband and i crying about how little it cost and it made us feel so guilty, like our dog was only worth $25. of course, he was our baby, so that was not the case at all. but beforehand, i had called our vet and i think it was going to be more like $300, but all vets charge differently. our vet refused to put him down so we felt the az humane society would be better. my husband took our dog in the morning and the front desk lady was really sweet. they said to stay as long as he wanted and take his time saying goodbye. my husband chose to say goodbye while our dog was still alive.a decision i think he would stick to again. this is mainly b/c a few years before this, i had a dog put down that i had had for over nine years. she was old and it was her time. i took her to the humane society on dobson in mesa. they were really nice there as well. i chose to stay with her while they put her down and it damn near devestated me for a really long time. i guess it was hard either way, but actually watching her become lifeless was a bit more than i could bare. it happened very quickly, and she didn't feel any pain. even now i can picture her just lying there, and can't keep the tears from falling. i don't mean to be a debbie downer, i am just trying to show you both sides, so you can decide what you can live with. i really stayed w/her until the end b/c she and i had gone everywhere together and i thought it best that no matter how hard it would be on me later, she deserved having me hold her. either way, it's terribly hard and i'm so sorry for your loss. only you can decide what is best for the two of you. good luck and god bless. | | this time i want a smart president!

Alert | I've taken 2 cats to be put down at the mesa humane shelter on rio salado between the 101 and dobson. Each time they were super nice and sweet about the whole thing. I think they were $25 each. I knew I wasn't going to bury them in the backyard, so I figured why pay more for cremation if I wasn't gonna it. If you're gonna keep it, better call around to the vets.
I'm sorry I know how hard it is to do.

Alert | the az humane society did give us the option of getting our dog cremated. the lady gave us a price but then said we would get the ashes of any and all dogs/cats they euthanized that day. but, she did say for a higher fee, we could opt to get the ashes from our dog b/c they would cremate him seperately. my husband was so distraught, he couldn't even think of bringing his beloved dog home in any other fashion than alive. i think now, we would have chosen differently, but at the time, it was too emotional to even think about. but that's just a head's up on what they told us. ugh. again, i'm so sorry for you having to go through this. i've been thinking of this all day since i've seen and posted to this thread. i've been on the computer for hours on end today looking through old photos of our dogs. i don't know if you ever said, but what is his name? what kind of dog is he? | | this time i want a smart president!

Alert | I am going to have to put my 12 year old Rottie down within the next few weeks as well. He, too, has (an aggressive) cancer, is losing a lot of weight and struggles getting up and down. I am unsure what the cutoff is between quality and quantity of life; what a crappy feeling. I think Maricopa Wells told me they charged around $30.00 - $40.00 to euthanize, but I didn't check to see if that included the burial. I was going to call them tomorrow to get the rest of the details (all costs, housecalls, etc.). When I do, I will post it. I have been there holding a friend's dog during euthnasia, and it is quite peaceful; they just go to sleep, but after 12 years with my dog, I don't know if I could stand to watch it. It has been hard enough taking him to two different vets (wanted another opinion) only to have them both tell me he didn't have much longer. While we contemplate our animal's mortality, I guess we can have comfort knowing they don't live as long as humans, but we gave them the best life possible. My thoughts and prayers will be with you - s

Alert | I am sorry to hear about your dog.
We had to put a dog down a few years ago and it was very tough. A friend of ours son-in-law have a Vet business in Mesa. He was the most compassionate Vet we have ever met. We were in the room the whole time holding our Elvis as he had a very peaceful passing. If you are interested, please PM me and I will pass the information along. | | "We are overcome by anguish at this illogical moment of humanity.” - Che

Alert | I called Maricopa Wells today, The cost to euthanize and dispose (cremate) is about $100.00. More if you wanted your dogs ashes; less if the dog passed at home and you wanted them to properly dispose of him/her, or, if you wanted to take the dog with you. The variable is with the weight of the animal. They told me the vet would come to the house if she could make time in her [busy] schedule. They were/are very nice. Incidently, I also went to a vet in Chandler. Everyone was very nice; my vet did not sugar coat anything and was very direct and straight forward, which I appreciate. I would absolutely go there again. Let me know if you want the information for it. I hope this helps, let me know if you you need further - s

Alert | Don't remember where this came from but maybe it might help come to terms with the decision. It is one of the hardest you will ever make. It still brings tears to my eyes remembering my old dog I put down several years ago. I hope it helps you.
A DOG’S PLEA
Treat me kindly, my beloved friend, for no heart in all the world is more grateful for kindness than the heart of me.
Do not break my spirit with a stick, for though I should lick your hands between blows, your patience and understanding will more quickly teach me the things you would have me learn.
Speak to me often, for your voice is the world’s sweetest music, as you must know by the fierce wagging of my tail when your footstep falls upon my waiting ear.
Please take me inside when it is cold and wet, for I am a domesticated animal, no longer accustomed to bitter elements. I ask no greater glory than the privilege of sitting at your feet beside the hearth.
Keep my pan filled with fresh water, for I cannot tell you when I suffer thirst. Feed me clean food that I may stay well, to romp and play and do your bidding, to walk by your side, and stand ready, willing and able to protect you with my life, should your life be in danger.
And, my friend, when I am very old, and no longer enjoy good health, hearing and sight, do not make heroic efforts to keep me going, I am not having any fun. Please see that my trusting life is taken gently. I shall leave this earth knowing with the last breath I draw that my fate was always safest in your hands.

Alert | As I sit here reading these heartfelt replys all I can do is cry. I am so sorry for what you all went through and continue to go through. I eventually will have to make the same decisions and it will be one of the toughest decisions of my life. All I can say is be there for your pet and know that they gave you the best years of their lives. I am so sorry.

Alert | | I have had to put 2 dog's down in this past year. It is VERY HARD and very sad. I took them to Maricopa Wells and they were GREAT! They could see right away I was doing the right thing and let me sit on the floor with the boy's and comfort them while they VERY peacefully slipped away! You are doing the right thing it hurts but it is right!!! | | Senior Member Posts: 3899 Joined: Jan 2006

Alert | This is such a hard topic but it's nice to know people go thought it to. Our family dog Sasha a Cocker Spaniel had cancer. She was about 12 and the doctors said she had it for years. They kept saying how her will to live was so great she wouldnt pass. We had surgery to remove most of the cancer to prolong her life but she was still so weak. She would barely walk and she slept all the time. At night she would howl in pain but when we went to comfort her she would stop. We kept saying she would pass on her own when she was ready. 2 years later she was still with us. We kept bringing her to the dr and they kept assuring us that we would know when it was time. One day my sister called me and said hey I think it's time. I tried to fly home but I couldnt afford the ticket so I was on the phone the whole time.
That day she gave her ham and eggs for breakfast, a haircut, a bath, put on a new collar and bows. She went on her last walk, layed out in the backyard, and rode to the humaine socity with the window down and her ears blowing in the wind like she loved. The vet said they could leave but my lil sister wanted to hold her. So with me on speaker phone they gave her the shot and we all told her how much we loved her. She looked at my sister and then she just layed her head down like she was sleeping and closed her eyes. Even the dr and assistant were crying. My sisters stayed about another 30 min petting her. The vet warned that she may release gas and have a bowl momement but she never did. She was so good even in the end.
We still miss her and I swear I hear her still so does my mom and sisters. Its so weird almost like she never left. We hear her moving her collar and scratching. When I feel her around I just talk to her and tell her how much I love her and miss her. I hope I never have to go through that again. I wish you the best of luck its never something easy to do.
We still bring our other pets to the vet and they always remember us as the family whos dog would never give up even when she was in pain. She lived many years past what she was suppose to and we were so grateful to have had her! R.I.P. Sasha auntie loves you!

Alert | We just had our Golden put down last week. She had a huge tumor on her face. We had it done at the Humane Society. Rabies/Animal control will not do it. The HS in sunnyslope on Hatcher is the most affordable location.. its $50 including burial (landfill). The can arrange for cremation, but the fees run close to what a private vet charges. They do it immediately but you are not allowed in the room with your pet.
Sorry to hear about your pet!

Alert | From the humane society website: http://www.azhumane.org/artman2/publish/programs/euthanasia.shtml Owner-Requested Euthanasia Posted in: Programs and Services Nov 29, 2007 - 12:14:01 PM
Deciding when to let your pet go is a difficult decision. We understand. We provide humane euthanasia services to the public at our Sunnyslope Facility during our animal intake hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. Our fees begin at $50 and vary based on the level of after-care services you request. If you must euthanize your injured, ill or aged pet and we are closed, please contact your veterinarian or an emergency animal clinic.
Because of the high volume of customers we assist, we cannot provide owner-attended services. If you wish to remain with your pet at the time of euthanasia, please contact a full-service veterinary clinic. For more information about our owner-requested euthanasia services, please call 602.997.7586 ext. 2063.

Alert | I had my Rottie put to sleep yesterday. I called Maricopa Wells and they were kind enough to do it the same day, even though they were only working until 1pm and had a full schedule. They came out to the house that afternoon, after they finished with their work (I couldn't stand taking him down to do it in an unfamiliar place). The charges were: $75.00 for the house call; $67.97 for sedation (75-99 lbs [only used if they feel it necessary]); $99.85 for euthanasia and cremation. I had the choice to remain with him, or not, and they took him with them when they left. They were very nice and accommodating. I will use them again and would recommend them. I wish you the best - s
