06/23/2008 6:56 PM Alert

I went to the Nail salon by Basha's on Saturday for an upper lip wax.  I went there b/c I am familiar with the girl who does the waxing there.  I told her I was very nervous about waxing my upper lip as I have sensitive skin and have never waxed there before.   What should have been an $8 lip wax, has turned into a $70 urgent care/pharmacy visit.   This place IS NOT CLEAN!!  I luckily went to Urgent care on my lunch break today b/c my lip has been swollen, red, itchy, and full of puss filled bumps since Saturday morning.  Thank goodness I went to have it checked out b/c it turns out I have Cellulitis (bacterial infection, if left untreated can lead to staph infection or MRSA!!)  The Dr. said if I had not gone in to see him today I could have ended up in the hospital as it would have spread more and more.     I spoke w/ the "owner" and he tried to tell me his wax is clean and asked me if I put Neosporin on it?!!   I told him he's lucky it happened to someone like me and not some sue-happy crazy person.  I didn't expect them to understand or take responsibility but I did let them know that if they don't change their wax and use more sanitary procedures this will happen again and next time the person might not be as nice as I was in handling the situation.       BE CAREFUL when getting your nails done or getting waxed at any of these places.  I would recommend bringing your own manicure/pedicure tools instead of using theirs.  You never know what kind of germs they could have on their tools. And especially DO NOT get waxed at any of these places, either do it yourself at home or find another alternative.   I just wanted to share my experience and hopefully prevent someone else from going through the same pain I'm going through.

I am so sorry to hear that millertime. Has anyone been to the place next to Fry's?

The place next to Fry's is owned by the same people, so I wouldn't bother going there either

I too have sensitive skin. Everytime I get waxed I usually get red and break out the next day. I just keep my skin cleansed and use Neosporin and it clears up right away. That is such an unfortunate incident. Most of the time I go to Susan at Above and Beyond. She is great. It's really hard to tell who is sanitary and who isn't. It sounds like your skin may be too sensitive for any kind of waxing anywhere. I hope you feel better millertime.

This has nothing to do with my skin being too sensitive for waxing, I've been having my brows done for 10 years now. It is a BACTERIAL infection, caused by unsanitary conditions. The Dr. confirmed it. I know people who have gotten Cellulitis from a pedicure as well, which is from unclean tools. The only thing that was on my face was the wax, and from that point on my lip got redder, more inflamed, itchy and bumpy until I had to go to Urgent Care. Neosporin was not taking care of this problem. I usually get red and have one or two pimples pop up when I do my brows, but I've never in my life experienced something like this. It's been 5 days since I got waxed and it's just starting to clear up, and I've been on antibiotics since Monday. It's real fun having to go to work everyday and having people stare at you and wonder what the h*ll is wrong with your face.

Hopefully the salon offered to pay for your urgent care visit! A respectable place would!

I would stick to home waxing or find another alternative. The thought of what could have contaminated the wax is enough for me. (shiver) Of course I'm an admitted germophobe anyway!

Regarding the place near Fry's, in April 2007 I got poked with a sharp instrument on the side of my left large toenail. I had been there several times before that. It was the only nail salon I had ever been to. Well, I ended up with an infection on that toe, then proceeded to get a fungus under that toenail and one of the toes on my right foot. Now, I was 64 years old at the time and had never had a problem with my toes. In fact, they were very pretty. Now they're not. I sent the owner a letter, and never got a response. I have been to a podiatrist for surgery on my toe twice now, and the nail is quite deformed.

I will never set foot in a nail salon again. In my opinion, they are completely unsanitary. I do my nails myself again.

I have gotten a pedicure there twice, after reading this... never again! Does Above and Beyond do Manis/pedis? What about facials?

For great facials and professional, high quality waxing go to Karen Benedek inside Hair Focus on Honeycutt! She is licensed and wonderful at her job.

I had a facial 2 weeks ago, and it was fantastic I really didn't want it to end! Call 602-570-9224 to make an appointment. I think she also takes walk-ins, the salon would know more.

File a complaint with the AZ Cosmetology Board.

While I have not yet used her services, I did visit and speak with Vanessa of Lovelee Skin. She was incredibly nice and her office was very professional and has a spa type feel. If I were to have anyone touch my skin in the Copa it would be here.

Okay, I know this is kind of off topic, but if you guys get a chance, check out this video. I get my nails done every 2 weeks in Tempe (by my work) and they do a awesome job....but I can't help but just start giggling when I go in there now.

Millertime- Did you contact the AZ state board of cosmetology? They should be notified of any unacceptable service your receive ESPECIALLY if it is due to a salon being unsanitary. They will conduct an investigation and potentially fine the salon/service provider. Their website is http://www.azboc.gov

A good sign that you're in for an infection is when you walk in and don't see their tools in the blue sanitizing jars. I hope your lip gets better quickly!
