Hi everyone. I know that everyone knows that it is hot out. But please keep in mind that Dogs do  not sweat and they can become over heated very quickly. The garage gets even hoter then out side. Please bring in your pets. If you can not bring them in then have a cover for them and a mister system or pool however they can still over heat so please be careful. Sorry for my spelling I am in a hurry

Can I add to this, I see so many people walking their dogs in the middle of the day. The concrete is very hot, if you wouldn't walk barefoot on it please don't make your dog do it. Their feet burn easily...thanks!

Our dogs stay outside during the day. I would let them in more if they would behave inside. We did buy them a pool to play in and one of them decided it made a better play toy then a pool and tore it apart. I go out a few times a day and drench them with the hose. They like that and it is like a game to them.

Maybe think about misters. In 120 degree heat it only takes minutes to over heat.

Yeah, our puppies stay outside most of the day, too. I bring them in to feed them a couple times a day and make sure they have water, but the last few days I kept them inside all day, I got no work done because they kept getting into stuff and then fighting, and then right after I let them out, I noticed they pottied 3 times in the house (they are about 90% potty-trained normally..I don't know what they were thinking that day.) So if it is particularly hot out I bring them inside and have to separate them, one in the laundry room and one in the bathroom. I think they are happier outside for most of the day. It sucks, but I feel like I need a full-time babysitter for them sometimes, lol.

I might get them a little play pool; we will see how long it takes for them to tear it apart or try to drown each other. Honestly, these dogs are silly and do the oddest things, so I wouldn't it put it past them for something crazy to go down with a pool and no supervision. I plan on having to play lifeguard/bouncer for a while with a kiddie pool.

I just worry alot about this dogs being outside, I see very horriable things when it comes to heat stroke in an animal. Sorry I keep bringing this up but its hot out there so please bring them in every chance you get!!!! Thanks everyone for loving your animals!!!!

Thank you for bringing this subject up. When people adopt a dog they need to realize that we live in the desert. It is too hot to keep them outside for even a short period of time. People need to take responsibilty for their animals and bring them inside. If they are having problems with the dog's actions inside the house then seek a trainer. I have a 96 pound lab that sheds everywhere inside and it took a while for him to settle down. I know what it is like to have an out of control dog. He does fine in the house now and I would NEVER leave him outside in this heat. Install a doggy door if no one is home during the day. IT'S TOO HOT TO LEAVE ANY ANIMAL OUTSIDE!!!!!!!!!!

I've lived here most of my life and our dogs have always stayed outside. My mother would not allow animals in the house. We never had a dog die of heat stroke from being outside all summer. They all died of old age and all lived to be at least 13.
I have two dogs now that do not come in the house. They have plenty of water and shade and a kiddie pools to play in. The key is to acclimate the animals.

They put up a bunch of ugly boxes and JESUS people bought em!

Can I just ask... Why have a dog if its always outside. I have heard alot of people say that there pets are there family members however they arent allowed in the house. I would not call that a family member. Please dont take this the wrong way. I have just always wondered why have a dog if they are always outside?

If you people would pay attention to your pets and provide them with the proper training, your dogs wouldn't be misbehaving in your house.  I know that there are a lot of unloved pets without homes, but why even have a pet if you are just going to leave it outside all day?  What kind of a life is that?  Why do people get pets and then get rid of them a few months later?  You made that decision live with it!  Don't take it back to the humane society or to the pound...or worse the desert surrounding Maricopa!

My dogs are outside to guard the house and are VERY well cared for. Just because they don't live in the house and sleep in the house doesn't mean I don't let them in and they are very well trained. I love my dogs as much or more than anyone who lets their dogs stay inside all the time.
If my dogs should happen to get out of the yard and get lost I know they could survive and not die from the heat the first day.
Hey, to each his own.

I did see some dog misters at ace hardware, it was a neat idea. I think it would be a good idea to have one of those for your pets if they are kept outside all day :-)

I know this is an old thread but my experience at a local grocer goes along with this issue. I came out of the store and walked by a car with two cute white dogs. They were barking and active but who knows how long they had been in the car alone. Yeah, the windows were open but it does not matter. The temp read 103 when I got to my car. While I was in process of calling non emergency pd number the owner came out. No word to me, just unlocked car got in and left. She was not shopping but getting COFFEE. Let's see coffee vs hot dogs in car. Doesn't seem like a choice to me, take the dogs home or use a drive thru. When I did get through to a person because the car left all they could do is send me to animal control who can't do anything. It's just frustrating the way people treat "family" in certain situations.

I had to call the cops once on someone who left their dog in the car in the summer, window were only cracked and the dog was crying. Only takes a few minutes for them to die of heat stroke, if I won't sit in the car when its turned off, then my dogs don't either.

We had a neighbor with a Black Lab who kept it outside all of the time, even to sleep at night once they had a baby.  They did have a pool though. They said when it was very hot they kept him crated up inside.   It just so happened she and my husband were talking on how we wanted a dog. She quickly offerred to give the Lab to us since they had no time for him. Well, we adopted him and have had him a year. They gave us the crate and for the first few days when not home we used it. But I felt bad, so let him out. Needless to say, he never destroyed anything or got into any trouble as we were warned. We let him inside during the day, but I am also a stay at home mom so I can make sure he is good .  What's odd now is that he hates being outside. He cries and barks to come in after a couple minutes, and with the old owners he was out 24/7.      I have two small children and he is nothing but gentle with them, a bit big with those paws and all, but I intervene if he accidentally plays too rough. Just had to share that story of how the same dog can have different owners have such a different opinion.

That is so true! People just need to take the time with there animals rather then getting a dog and putting it outside becasue it is "Bad". That is a great story!

AMEN!!! If your dog does not behave when it is inside, then put it in a kennel. I am babysitting a 3 year old HYPER doberman right now that must be in the kennel when she is inside because otherwise she is destructive and like a bull in a china shop. She is a great dog, but has had little training. She is kept inside in her kennel during the day so that she doesn't have to be out in the 115 degree heat. She doesn't mind going in her kennel at all because she gets praise and cookies when she goes in there and for most dogs it is a safe place. If your dog doesn't behave when it is inside, please consider crate training or some type of training rather than just making it an outside dog. What is the purpose of getting a dog if it just sits in the back yard all day by itself being bored and hot?
