Perhaps we should work on giving these people job skills so they feel as though they can make it when they get out. No hope = back to a life of crime.

I have no problem with that, but I am sure that you agree that some can not be rehabilitated. What do you do with the unrehabilitatable (is that a word?) career criminals? Let them out time after time to hurt more people?

Why should I spend my tax dollars so some worthless POS can sit behind bars receiving three squares and a bed for the rest of their life? This when law abiding people are homeless, children go to bed hungry, and the quality of education in the US has continued to decline due to economic constraints. No thank you. Now ask me if I believe in the death penalty. Yes I do. Do the crime - accept the risk of punishment. BUT you better be 100% certain that person is guilty. Too many people have been exonerated after 10-20 years behind bars for a crime they didn't commit. We need a better system of rehabilitation - job training, drug and alcohol rehab etc to prevent further crimes due to those factors. Yes, there are career criminals but then there are those who are victims of a vicious cycle.

Here is the website for the actual report rather than a media spin on it. http://www.pewcenteronthestates.org/uploadedFiles/8015PCTS_Prison08_FINAL_2-1-1_FORWEB.pdf It is actually very interesting and mentions very little about "3 strikes laws" It also shows that california had one of the largest prison population reductions in the nation. Go figure....The report attributes most of the increase in prison population due to drug offenses and parole/probation violations. Again, why, in a free society is the burden of rehabilatation of criminals placed on the law-abiding citizens? Maybe, just maybe, if prisons had you making little rocks out big rocks all day you just might not do those things that make you go back. This report talks about trends on increasing prison populations over the last 30 years but it does not look out how much different we treat our prisoners in those last 30 years. We have, by legislation and judicial interpretation, taken the punishment aspect out of incarceration. I guess the belief in this free society that merely taking away your freedoms is punishment enough. Myabe we ought to re-think that?

If you have something to say then say it. Incaceration IS punishment. What makes you think that it is a fun place that people want to go to? Even homeless people have it better. If you think isolation from your family and friends, living in a 10 foot square, eating crap food, and having to worry about fights with other inmates is not punishment then I don't know what is.
