Is anyone else who has the Carefree floor plan having trouble getting a queen size box spring up the stairs? I gave it a try for several hours over the weekend and came to the conclusion that it was impossible. Fast forward a few days ahead... after talking to Mike and Jeremy (the construction supervisors), Tim and Scott (Sales Office) and customer service I have confirmed it is indeed impossible to get a queen size box spring up the stairs. I was basically told by everyone "oh well, not our problem." DR Horton's solution is for me to go buy a new King size bed since the box spring comes in two pieces. Of course none of this was in the disclosures and I know for a fact they knew about this before hand. Am I crazy to be more than a little annoyed about this?

I know a buy who had this model house and he had to cut off part of the drywall and basically re-build the wall in order to get some of their things upstairs. I would think you could file a complaint with the ROC on this as I'm sure it's a common problem which they have failed to correct. I would guess if they know about it they must disclose it...DR Horton may end up buying you a new king size bed!

We are closing in Oct. 8th. on the carefree model. Good to know about. We have a Cal- king though. But the spare rooms we wanted queens in both. Hmmm. What to do now. Cut a hole in the wall upstairs in the back. Put everything we want inside then close the hole with french doors leading to the porch roof? Wish me luck too I guess.

Got some more info on this... I talked to a lady at work who used to own a Carefree in Buckeye a few years ago. The plant shelf over the stairway that is impeading my ability to get the bed upstairs wasn't in her home. So it looks like it originally was possible but some designer probably thought a plant shelf would look pretty and screwed up the whole design of the house.

That's probably what it was the guy I know said he removed.

That would make me a little upset to say the least! How many bedrooms are upstairs?

There are normally 3 bedrooms upstairs, but I got the 4th bedroom option, so there are 4.

Sorry to say, but I think you're out of luck. You're probably going to have to get a little creative in getting that bed up stairs. When I had my build, I measured almost everything and making sure we have room to move stuff where we wanted them; on the other hand, we don't have a two story house, which I, personally, don't like. It's such a hassle to go up and down. But that's just me. Good luck.

*edit to say that I don't have a two story house*

Do you have any upstairs windows you could pull out and go through a window? Would you have to tear out studs from a wall or just drywall to get the bed upstairs? If it's just drywall, I would rip it out and have one of the subcontractors come back and patch it for you. Drywall is pretty inexpensive but having to tear out studs would be a big pain.

Well my first assumption was also that I was going to be out of luck, but the more I have thought about it, this is a major issue which lowers the value of the home. Problems such as these are exactly why they have real estate disclosure laws. I'm going to continue to push DR Horton on it. I'm not asking for anything crazy... at this point I would be happy if they would just come out and take the railing down for 20 mins so I could put my bed upstairs.

I honestly don't think this falls under a disclosure law. You can go to numerous websites and pull up real estate law and everything you would ever need to know on what a real estate agent / builder would have to disclose. Like I said, I don't think this falls under that, but I could definitely be wrong. Good luck and keep us updated.

I had the exact same problem with Pulte, but they widened my stairwell and elevated my ceilings so I could get my Hot Tub into my Master Bath room. Free of course.

Maybe I am incorrect in this. Maybe this doesn't fall under disclosure laws, but I'd like to hear that from someone a lot higher up in DR Horton that the sales guy. Awaiting a call back right now.

I'd say go for it Ken, you have nothing to lose. Again, I hope your voice does not fall on deaf ears. Good luck!

Just wanted to update everyone. DR Horton is coming out on Wednesday to remove the plant shelf that is blocking my bed from getting up the stairs. They offered to put it back when I was done moving the bed, but I'm going to opt for it to stay gone.

Good to hear. Now, does this need to be on paper? Wouldn't want this to be a 2 months or 6 months wait.

i know this topic closed a while ago but i have the carefee model and after 12 hrs of moving i was not thinking when i tried to put my queen size up the stairs. i scuffed walls and broke plaster. but after a few days of calming down i managed to get the queen size box spring up there with no issues at all. barely touched the wall.

the way to do it is to have the box spring long ways. 80in long and 60in high. take it up the stairs and hug the post. pivit around the post with the cloth side hugging the post (wood side out). your back end should come close to scraping the wall near the entry way window. but then it goes up.

no blemishes to wall. no need to remove plant shelf or take power tools to your new home.

besides the windows at 60 inches wide but that is including the window frame. so prolly about 58 or 57 inches if you take out windows.

While this is a known problem...for anyone looking to avoid the hassle who may not have purchased their bed yet - you can purchase a Queen sized box spring in 2 parts - just like a king. I had the same problem in my previous home so we got lucky when we moved into our new house that we already had a 2 piece box spring.
