I think you have a Carrier air conditioner:

"The brand leaders in the air conditioner market are Carrier, Kenmore, Whirlpool, Samsung, LG, Sharp, Panasonic and Friedrich. All are available in a wide range of BTU and EER ratings. Carrier air conditioners are by far the best. They are known for their extreme noiseless function, quick cooling and long lives of compressor and condenser. Carrier air conditioners are also the most expensive air conditioners in the market. Some of the newer Carrier models have replaced the environmentally harmful Freon-22 with Puron, a less polluting liquid."

Carrier units are one of the best. Unfortunately you might have gotten a lemon. You have a 2 year warranty on it.

It's too bad they don't use R-12 anymore. It was way more efficient

What are you talking about jhall? Got any data to back up that statement? Do you even know what R-12 is.

jhall, I think you meant SEER rating. Some agency (EPA?) requires builders to use a minimum of a 13 SEER rating instead of the 12 SEER rating that used to be required. 13 SEER units are supposed to be more efficient than the 12.

The reason R-12 worked better is because it never breaks down. The only reason you ever need to replace R-12 is if it leaks our of your A/C system. When it leaks out, it likes to congregate in cold places like the north and south poles. R-12 is one of the factors for the disappearing ozone but it was a top notch refrigerant

Remember when the big Ozone layer disappearing used to be the last Global warming scare.... what was before that acid rain or depletion of rain forests? I wonder what will be the next thing to keep people afraid and obedient.....

To Alan... I used to own a business restoring Classic Muscle cars... all of them used R-12 and some of them, over 40 years old still worked! This garbage that they make us use now sucks. R-134a is no where near as good as a refrigerant. If R12 is so damaging why do they still use it for building and industrial ac units but no longer inc cars or homes. I am also curious on these "measurements" they did of r12 on the north and south poles and how they ever measured it pre 1950s....
