After our emergency meeting Thursday, the BOD asked if I would post a response to what we have decided to do regarding the recent outbreak of PARVO at our community.

After researching all alternatives, we decided that we would scalp the grass throughout the community, which we would have done anyway in early spring in preparation for spring seeding. The grass will be carried away by H&N Landscaping. This will at least remove most of the virus (we hope) from the common areas and help to reduce the chance of spreading throughout the community. Bleaching the grass was not a solution as re-contamination could not be guaranteed at a cost of $20,000. There is no sure fire way to erradicate this virus, but hopefully with this campaign, we can slow the spread and increase awareness.

The other part of this campaign is to educate our community about the virus, make information available via our website, www.maricopameadowshoa.com, in our newsletter (which will be mailed out this week), and via this forum. We have also sent this information as a follow up at the request of ABC15 news.

Should anyone have additional questions or concerns, contact Deborah Hyrb at dhyrb@pdsaz.com, or your local vet's office.

Anyone know if this will have any effect on the survival of the virus??? "IF" it was passed through the water in the sprinklers because of the lake... won't it just come back when they water again?? Should the lake be treated?? Has the lake been tested??

Riverfamily,

I can say with quite certainty that the water didnt spread the disease. Check out this link: http://www.aspca.org/site/PageServer?pagename=aspcaprosm_parvovirus There is some really good information regarding transmission, please make sure you get it from reputable sites. There is no surefire way to "rid" any common area of the virus. The most common transmission is through infected feces of dogs, not through lake water. I hope this helps.

Snake Eyes,

Seeing as how the Association would have to do this in preparation for the spring seeding, its not a "non-budgeted" item.

I really shouldn't reveal our cost on this forum, but should you want the numbers and can identify yourself as a member of our community, contact Deborah at dhyrb@pdsaz.com. I am trying to work harder on protecting the information that is not public domain. Hope you understand.
