With the schools being in the center of the community, a community pool, splash pad, etc, is just an all around bad idea.

Not to mention that I chose this community also because it does not have a community pool. We built one and don't want to pay for an additional poll that we will not be using.

Well, if you don't want a community pool, then it's settled.

I think we should have a community pool/center for a variety of reasons. From my research it will increase the desirability of our community meaning easier sales and higher prices. It will also go a long way of providing a safe venue for our kids. It will give the teens a place to hangout. Being close to the schools our kids can walk there after school and partake in supervised activities. If the community doesn't fully utilize it we can sell season passes to those outside MM recouping some of the cost. One place where I lived had this setup and it worked very well; it was alway crowded with kids and their parents.
Another advantage is environmental. Yes it's nice to have your own pool but we live in a desert. Water is a scarce resource - and only going to get scarcer. A community pool would use way less water and energy than if we each had our own.
I would like to see actual facts and figures on the cost of having and maintaining a community pool/center so a decision would be reality based.

Interesting. We are putting lights in the tot lots under the the gazebos and in the park instead of reseeding this year. I'm not particularly fond of the idea as the light will be next to my bedroom but I understand the need.
I, for one, am interesting in finding out if a community pool/center will improve our communities valuation and at what cost or even if it is feasible. My decision will be based on facts and what is best for our community. Good points have been raised here that need answering. We should find out if a majority of homeowners are interested in determining the effects of community pool/center and, if so, have a committee under the HOA to find answers. We can then have a rational discussion on this issue and decide what is best for our community.
I have a question for Devil Dog. If you consider your neighbors at Maricopa Meadows "nut cases and child predators " why did you decide to move here? I don't appreciate some that someone that does know me saying I'm depraved. You owe all your neighbors an apology!

I'm all about serving my community in the right ways and i love my new house. Nightly I walk the neighborhood to see what's happening around the house and talk to the neighbors to get a feel for our surrondins. That why i moved here to get out of the rat race in Phx... Now that said. coming from other communities in the Phoenix area, most pool area are run down and not maintain correctly. Like any HOA you get what you pay in. The HOA contracts what they can afford, which is not much to begain with. At the same time no one wants to raise the fees.

As far as nut cases and predators - We have them in all communities and that is a fact. Not everybody is one but there is a few out threre. If you do not know that - sorry for you.

Sure if we get a pool, who will be the safety guards. No one! They will place a sign with rules and times on it. But we all know that rules are broken. All it will take is a few bad apples to ruin for the rest of the community. Think about it only about 20% of the community will use the pool on a regular bases. Not worth the time and money... I vote No.

All I'm saying is to research the issue and then let the community decide. I don't know the answers to your questions -- they are good ones. But from what I can tell you are shooting from the hip. How do you know only 20% of us will use the pool, you never asked me or any of my neighbors. If I'm wrong please point me to where you got these "facts" from. Again, I prefer making decisions based upon research not simply what I choose to be.

As to nut cases and predators in all communities being a fact -- again that is your opinion. There is no statistical analysis that I am aware of to back up your assertion. I do know we have predators and some undesirable people in the community. As far as I am concerned a community pool/center would be a MUCH safer place for kids as we can control the comings and goings of those who enter.

Again, I had a community pool where I live for 22 years in Brooklyn NY and if you think Maricopa Meadows can stand against Brooklyn in "nut cases and predators" you need to do some more thinking. We had NONE of the horrible situations you assign to a community pool. Yes, we had problems and they were dealt including expelling some folk that did break the rules.

Why do a pool when I see kids fishing in and swimming in our water feature all the time during warm months. I see entire families walking around on the water falls and splashing around. Certainly this must be a lot better than a community swimming pool.

Because we are switching to reclaimed water. For safety's sake we should not be allowing our kids to play in this water unless Global Water will ensure that the water is safe.

As to the fish, they are there to maintain the ecosystem of the pond. If the kids catch them, we will need to replace them -- as in another HOA cost.
