Alert | I can't believe i got duped by a solicitor...and just wanted to caution everyone out there. I had a Hispanic guy come by our house, with a sheet of paper saying that he was running a non profit organization, which was trying to educate mothers etc about the spread of drugs in our community etc. etc. and if i could just donate a couple of bucks, they would also paint our house number on the sidewalk for us. I am always very cautious about these guys, but for some reason he seemed to have an honest, clean cut face and the thing i probably fell for, was that he came by with his 2 kids around 5-7 years old,and that just caused me to let me guard down. I told him i had barely $10 in cash, and i went ahead and gave it to him!! He said he would have that painted in 1/2 hour..and ofcourse he was never to be seen again. I felt utterly stupid and my husband has been rubbing it in ever since<img src='http://www.85239.com/desktopmodules/ntforums/images/emoticons/sad.gif' height='20' width='20' border='0' title='Sad' align='absmiddle'>...please just be careful. I wish i could report him somewhere, but have nothing to go with. Ugh..

Alert | Give him some time, maybe he's just late.
I had the same thing, same MO happen a while back. I started to get upset thinking the same thing, I'd been duped, but the guy was just really late getting the job done.

Alert | I saw these people in Cobblestone the other day and thought it better to not open the door. Now I wonder why they don't paint the sidewalk right then and there for it only takes a minute and customer satisfaction will bring more donations.

Alert | Many of the people going door to door are not connected with any Non-profit organization. Any money they have left after paying some friend to paint the curb, if in fact they actually do, is unreported, untaxed profit. As a result, this money won't reduce their welfare benefits either. The two best ways to stop this type of crime is 1.) don't open your door to strangers (best advice) 2.) greet the solicitor at the door with cell phone, pen and note pad in hand. Ask for personal identification, information about the non-profit organization they work for, and whether they have a city permit. Write down what they tell you. Probably 8 out of 10 won't be able to respond to your questions. You have every right ot ask these questions and every right to ask them to leave when they refuse.

Alert | Good Advice Cactus Rob. I too have a No Soliciting Sign at my door, If I want a type of service done I'll research and contact the company myself. As for Donations, I already have a list of charities that I give at the end of each year.
Sorry that happened to you..Live and learn.

Alert | | I had someone come by like this when I first moved in years ago, except they actually painted my house number on the sidewalk for the ten bucks.
