Alert | | I would be a bit leary of a padlock on any door. It could stop someone from getting out in an emergency. A security door would be better and safer, in my opinion. | | | |

Alert | That seems extreme and very unsafe - They sell the steel doors that have 2 sets of locks on it a key lock and a turn style lock and they start at about 75$
If your house catches fire I could not wanna deal with a padlock and if someone breaks in threw a window or back door I would personally wanna get out! The padlock is way more trouble than it would be worth. | | | |

Alert | Padlocking is only as strong as the hasp, which is only as strong as the screws, besides theres nothing to even screw to on a steel door, just the 3/32" metal skin. It sounds like you're willing to give up a little asthetics for security, if so the best bet would be a diagonal bar. Have you checked the door installation? there should be 3-4 inch screws in the hinges (one per) and on the jamb side of the deadbollt, also the bolt should throw all the way, many people don't realize this.

Alert | Good Lord! I must've been half asleep when I wrote this. I meant a deadbolt, not a padlock! OMG! I laughed this morning when I reread what I wrote. I kept thinking why would a deadbolt keep anyone from getting out? Sorry about that.
It just seems like the factory installed locks aren't all that secure on these doors. By all means if someone REALLY wanted to get in they could simply break any of the glass doors that are installed in all these prefabs. But I have had occasions in the past where people came up and just tried to open the door. Maybe young kids looking for a quick B&E hoping the door is just unlocked and they could walk in. And when we very first moved in and many of the houses on the street were unfinished someone tried to pry the door. We had only lived here maybe a week. Probably someone stealing construction supplies and not realizing the house was lived in. Just scares me. | | | |

Alert | Well, that's different.
But check the hinge screws anyway. Adding a deadbolt can be done, it's just a little tricky, you have to drill in from both sides to add it.
