An interesting Wall Street Journal article, based on a Gallup/Baylor University study.

This would be a very boring world if all that there was to experience is limited to what we see.

If Christians have limited their understanding and acceptance of the paranormal world, then they are missing the bigger picture of Scripture. The Bible talks about multiple dimensions, human/angel hybrids, angelic visitors, and even recognizes the existence of other "gods" which could have very well been supernatural creatures that deceived man into worshipping them. I think these things are interesting to muse upon.

Bill Maher is a dick. He is no different from the religious people who are consumed with hate and intolerance and are often the target of his mockery. Their similarities are so great that only the acceptance of God separates them.

I have a hard time believing that survey. I'd really like to see the wording/setup on that survey. Come on now, 21% of atheists believe in a god? I'm guessing someone either picked a bunch of morons that don't know the basic definition of atheist, or a large number of people weren't exactly truthful, or the wording was set up to be misleading.

I suspect there is a difference between "people who never worship" and people who don't believe in a god.

For the record, I don't believe in bigfoot, Nessy, Ghosts, or Psychic healing. I wonder if any of the other atheists here can verify what supernatural things they believe in.

Good points. I have always been intrigued on what the "Heros of old" really were

I am an atheist and don't believe any of the myths or supernatural stuff. By the way, if you knew me, you would not know I was an atheist. I keep it to myself unless someone tries pushing their beliefs on me. I respect all religions, most religious people, and don't put up a stink about people wanting to use the word "god"or wanting to pray or display their religious beliefs in public. They mean well and usually help keep the "civil" in civilizaton.

Real atheists do not believe in Jesus.

I think the concept of god has outlived its usefulness. It is time to put it out of its misery.

Not really an accurate statement, Cholo Bandito. I believe that there was a guy named Jesus who was born sometime around Year Zero.

Now, if you try to get me to believe that this guy came back from the dead, turned water into wine, healed the lepers -- well, that's where I STOP believing.

I am an atheist and I also do not try to push my belief (or non-belief) on to others. I know people can fervently defend their faith in God, Allah, Jehovah, Buddha or the like. To each his own. Being an atheist I also don't believe in other (in my opinion) mythical creatures like ghosts, big foot, santa or the tooth fairy. The study came from a baptist university and the article is titled "Look who's irrational now." I would guess that the results of the survey might be just a bit slanted.

I'm an atheist. I don't believe in a god or gods, nor do I believe in the supernatural.

However, I do believe that there is more to the natural world than we are able to percieve with our senses. Sharks can "see" electricity; bats and dolphins "hear" sonar. How different would our perception of existence be if we had these senses, or others that we can't even imagine? There's a scene in A Wrinkle in Time -- one of my very favorite books growing up -- in which the protagonists attempt to explain sight to an alien race that has no eyes. To this day, it makes me wonder what we're missing. We don't know what we don't know, and I find the possibilities of an invisible-to-us world fascinating.

Well said Michelle, I often wonder about the senses that we are lacking. Your words made me remember the animals that fled for high ground before the tsunami hit while we stupid humans played on the beach and collected sea shells oblivious to the energy that was headed toward.
I personally think that the study contains a certain amount of truth to it. I am an atheist as well and think that I have a more open mind to the "unknown" as it relates to the supernatural. This doesn't mean that I believe in ghosts, rather I have no personal evidence to prove their existance or not. I do agree that there is far more to this Earth than we are capable of interpreting with our not so keen senses.
IMO, religious folks are conditioned to disbelieve the supernatural because it conflicts with the belief system that they have been tought. I do find it ironic however that most do believe in angels and some form of demon or evil spirit.
As for the title of this thread, it would be better stated that atheists are more likely to accept the "possibility" of the paranormal/pseudoscience.
The word "believe" in my opinion is difficult for any atheist to label themselves with, especially when it comes to these types of issues.
For the record, I think Bill Maher is over the top with his views about religion. He seems to be the equal and opposite of a religious extremest in his intolerance and narrow minded precepts.[

Not completely true, it really depends on the type of denomination. The Catholic Church has whole teams of paranormalists, the bible speaks a lot about mythical beings, and beasts.

Atheism is just as much a belief system as theism.
