Alert | I will be giving a public presentation about the original and printer's manuscripts of the Book of Mormon on Sunday, February 24 at 7:00 p.m. at the LDS chapel on Honeycutt Ave. (across from the high school, next to the Catholic church). I have received written authorization from the LDS Church Intellectual Property Office, Community of Christ (formerly RLDS Church; owners of the printer's manuscript), and the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Studies (Brigham Young University) to display slides of images from the original and printer's manuscripts, as well as other material relating to the translation, transcription, and printing of the Book of Mormon. The Maricopa Stake Presidency (which presides over the six congregations in Maricopa as well as congregations in Gila Bend, Ajo, and San Tan) has approved and is sponsoring the presentation. Part of the presentation will cover common criticisms and concerns about the Book of Mormon, and there will be a Q&A session afterward, with questions submitted anonomously by index cards (which will accompany source material packets available for all who attend). Hope to see many of my 85239.com friends there! It will be interesting and enlightening for anyone who has any interest in or curiosity for the Book of Mormon. --- mm

Alert | [sarcasm]
Sounds like a great idea! I'll look into it.

Hmmm. Probably just a bit too crass and irreverent. Just a little.
Thanks for the tip, though!

Alert | They announced in 2nd ward (unless I misunderstood) that you have actual items from this time-period -- is this correct?
I have to try to find someone in the ward that wants to watch my kids. . .
I'll try to be there, it really sounds great!

How does showing the original and printer's manuscripts of the BOM give confidence that Mormonism is the correct religion? I'm quite sure you are not going to explain all the differences between the BOM today and the BOM from 1830.
Is there anyway you can tape this and upload it to youtube so myself and many others can watch it? You won't have enough index cards for me to show up | | Yeah, it's true- He allowed the fall of man/ But He used it now to exalt the Lamb/ The Lord, who's wise, permits existence of sin/ to be glorified in His forgiveness to men/

Alert | Posted By love@hm on 02/14/2008 8:26 AM They announced in 2nd ward (unless I misunderstood) that you have actual items from this time-period -- is this correct? No, that would be a member of our ward (the 5th ward). He has two 1830 editions in his family. I'll be showing scanned images of the original and printer's manuscripts, the Anthon transcript, and other items, some photographed with ultraviolet light so the ink shows up better. I have a good picture of 5/6Hev 44 Bar Kokhba (Dead Sea Scrolls, clearly uses Alma as an authentic male name --- Alma ben Yehuda; Alma the son of Judah). For years critics have insisted that Alma is and only is a Latin female name, and thus a laughable gaffe in the Book of Mormon. We now know that Alma exists multiple times in the Dead Sea Scrolls as a male name, does not occur in the Bible in any form, and nothing was known about the Dead Sea Scrolls until the twentieth century, so this is one of the intriguing tidbits we'll discuss. I couldn't get permission from the museum in Israel to scan and show it publicly, but I’ll pass around my book with photos of the Dead Sea Scroll manuscripts and fragments.

Alert | Posted By EEE on 02/14/2008 9:26 AM How does showing the original and printer's manuscripts of the BOM give confidence that Mormonism is the correct religion? As with the Bible, textual or physical evidences don't have much influence without spiritual belief. They can open up people to consider the possibility of religious faith, though, leaving room for belief (or the possibility of belief). They can also demonstrate to critics where their lines of attack are deficient. I'm quite sure you are not going to explain all the differences between the BOM today and the BOM from 1830. You’re quite wrong about me not covering changes between the 1830 and subsequent editions in the presentation; this is among the more common criticisms and concerns about the Book of Mormon, and is an important part of looking at insights and evidences from the manuscripts. As I’ve discussed before on this forum, though, all but a literal handful (less than ten) of these "changes" are spelling, printing, grammatical, stylistic, transcription, etc. They have no bearing on the authenticity of the record, just as similar (but vastly more numerous) changes and variants between extant Bible manuscripts have no bearing on the Bible's integrity. [quoteIs there anyway you can tape this and upload it to youtube so myself and many others can watch it? It's like the Hannah Montana movie --- live, for a limited time! You won't have enough index cards for me to show up Well, I won't have 3,913 (the number of word changes advanced by critics) cards clipped to a packet, if that's what you mean. You're more than welcome to come and ask a few questions, though. Besides --- you might be predestined to come!

Alert | Wow! You're going to be quite busy next Sunday night! That's flattering that the founder of the Church of Satan only gets you on conference call, but you're thinking of making a personal appearance with us. I'm touched!
Sodas? Maybe. Coffee? Nope.
Plenty of Kool-Aid, though!

Alert | He meant 'profit'. Profit as in for-profit, like all churches. Its a play on words. Two words that sound the same but have different meanings. Get it?
