Can Islam adapt to the modern world or will the traditional Muslim view, that the world is divided into the house of Islam and the house of war, prevail? Perhaps a more important question is, given the teachings of the Koran, can devout Muslims allow western culture to exist without jihad?

They should.

No. Islam by it's very nature is intolerant. While not all Muslims are extremists, the extremists use their interpretation of the Koran to justify mass homicide and other atrocities.

Christians have killed terribly in the past, with a prime example the crusades, but the Christians are acting contrary to what the Bible says... "love your neighbor, love your enemies, etc".

Whereas Muslims are acting according to what their Holy Book says. In fact, it is a COMMANDMENT! They must kill the pagans, the Jews, the Christians. They have the commandment to make the whole world Muslim. They may only make peace with a pagan country if they know they will lose a war with them, however, as soon as they are strong enough they must defeat them

So, the answer is NO.

The crusades were in retaliation to the Muslim movement that almost took the whole of the Eastern world.

There are alot of Muslims co-existing peacefully right now all over the world with the non-Islamic world. Look around you. It's the wacko extremists (of all religions mind you) that we need to watch out for.

Church leaders and royalty of the time used the idea of the Crusades for their own selfish desires/agendas. Saint Bernard of Clairvaux wasn't that saintly..........

JasonY – Yes the Crusades were used by the Church and later by kings to advance their own agendas, but that does not negate the fact that the Crusades were a reaction to the armed conquest of Christian lands by Muslims in the 600s. Prior to that time much of the Middle East and N. Africa was part of the Christian Byzantine Empire. Weakened by wars, epidemics, and religious dissidence, it fell rather easily to the Muslim led Arab alliance. The Crusades were an attempt to undo that conquest. When Muslims complain about the Crusades they conveniently forget about their previous conquest which started the whole thing. Deus vult!

Jasony - yes we have Christian extremist as well as Muslim extremists.A basic difference is the fact that the Christians are acting in violation of Christ's teachings. The Muslim extremist are obeying the Koran. Also you do not see large numbers cheering in the streets when some Christian blows up a building. We did see that in Muslim nations after 9/11.

Imagine how peaceful it would be today if the governments in 600 AD had adopted the doctrine of separation of church and state.

Or if only the best warrior from each side in a war fought in an arena, and the outcome decided which side won.

We wish! But Islam is a theocratic belief system. Since Muhammad himself, the goal has been a world wide Islamic state under the dictates of the Koran.

I am reminded of the man who was teaching others how to be a suicide bomber. He said "now pay attention, I am only going to show you this once".
