Please forgive me if this post does not read very smoothly, I don't always do a very good job of putting my thoughts down in to writing. But I was thinking about this last night and knew I had to post it.

With the Christmas season here, shouldn't we all be thinking about that ultimate gift? The gift of Jesus Christ. What an awesome gift that is! Our Christmas parties are had to celebrate Him and His birth, right? We give gifts to each other to remember and celebrate that gift that He gave us? During this season we should stop daily to give thanks to Him for this shouldn't we? Why then do many of us not do that? Why do so many people forget the real reason we call this a holiday? So many children are taught to look forward all year to a man in a red suit called Santa that will come down the chimney and bring them toys. And that, to them, is Christmas. No toy can compare to the ultimate gift of Jesus! They receive toys from reletives and friends and say thank you for them, have you taught your children to say thank you to the Lord for the greatest gift of all? We need to make sure that our focus is where it should be at Christmastime. On Jesus Christ. The one who suffered and died on a cross for all of us, to forgive us for our sins and give us everlasting life if we want it. All we have to do is ask Him.

Historically, this time of the year was dedicated to pagan festivals. Christmas still is pretty much a secular holiday celebrated by pagans, jews as well as people who believe in Jesus. Actually it wasn't until the mid 19th century that protestants even recognized Christamas as a holiday at all. Shortly after the reformation it was even prohibitted in some churches.

So while Christians are celebrating the birth of their Savior, recognize that many of us are celebrating family, friends, peace on earth and goodwill towards men.

Still doesn't explain why we are pressured into buying expensive gifts for each other?

Now a days, when people say "this is going to be the best christmas ever", it usually means expensive presents are involved.

Oh, the bit about buying expensive gifts for each other? That just boils down to advertising.

The gift giving is the pagan influence. Interestingly enough, it wasn't until the middle of the 20th century that most mainstream pagans embraced commercialism during the solstace season.

Seriously, many cultures celebrated winter "festivals" of varrying types. The American tradition of celebrating Christmas has always centered around the birth of Christ.
