Alert | As some of you know, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has provided more than $900 million in humanitarian activities worldwide from 1985-2006. (see here for more information on those projects - http://www.lds.org/humanitarianservices/0,19749,6208,00.html ) As we all know, the fires in California have been a huge tragedy for 100's of thousands. Here's a glimpse on what we're doing to help (copied from www.lds.org). Please notice the dates when the help arrived. SALT LAKE CITY 23 October 2007 The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is providing immediate emergency aid to victims of the California firestorms. Six semi-trucks have been dispatched to various evacuee shelters carrying a total of more than 28,000 blankets, 26,000 hygiene kits, processed foods, cots and other supplies. In addition to the relief supplies, 13 large church meetinghouses have been designated as shelters for evacuees. The first of two semi-trucks loaded with emergency relief supplies and processed food from local Church storehouses in Southern California was delivered to Qualcomm Stadium last night. Mormon volunteer missionaries helped unload and distribute the emergency goods to thousands of fire evacuees who have taken shelter at the stadium. The second truck was forced to turn around because of given road closures. It is now headed to Escondido and should be arriving there later this afternoon. “We are overwhelmingly grateful for the show of support from the LDS Church,” said Jenny Worth, director of Corporate Partnership Programs for the City of San Diego located in the mayor’s office. Worth said that the Church’s speed of response had made a difference. Another two semi-trucks loaded with relief supplies, one from a local storehouse in California and one from Salt Lake City, are expected to arrive at the Del Mar Fairgrounds later this afternoon. “In addition to providing emergency relief and volunteers, we have opened 13 of our larger Church meetinghouses for both our members and their neighbors who are seeking shelter and food,” said Donald P. Tenney, a regional Church leader in Southern California. “If you are in need of shelter and food, contact your Mormon neighbors; we are trying to keep them informed on where they can come to find shelter.” Emergency relief is also being made available at command posts near Lake Arrowhead, in San Bernardino, Canyon Country and various other fire sites. Welfare Services Emergency Response of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is coordinating with local government agencies and other community service organizations to provide emergency relief to victims.

Alert | Today's update: SAN BERNARDINO, California 25 October 2007 As the winds in Southern California have started to subside and firefighters accelerate their work combating 17 different fires, members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints joined the relief efforts Tuesday by ensuring evacuees and emergency personnel were fed. “Providing meals became a priority for Church members after they learned that some firefighters had worked for 15 hours with no food,” said Elder John Dalton, a Church leader in Southern California. Mormons in the San Bernardino area spent most of Wednesday morning preparing over 2,000 meals — 1,000 for evacuees staying at the National Orange Show Fairgrounds in San Bernardino and 1,000 for firefighters and police. Carolyn Fenn, a local Church leader, was concerned because it had been difficult to get provisions to those who were fighting the fires in the mountains. Tuesday night Fenn, along with 30 Mormon missionaries and 50 volunteers, prepared 1,000 sandwiches and delivered them to the firefighters’ command center in Lake Arrowhead. “Along with the sandwiches, we were able to deliver 100 dozen cookies baked by Church members. The firefighters appreciated the relief the food brought,” Fenn said. To date, the Church delivered five truckloads of supplies to evacuees in the San Diego area. Blankets and hygiene kits were given to evacuees in the Lake Arrowhead/Running Springs area. Thirteen chapels are currently being used as temporary shelters. “We will keep our chapels open as shelters and continue to provide food for as long as the community needs it,” said Dalton.

Alert | Bishop Goettl,
Listen that horn blown. (Just kidding.) I am glad the LDS church has the resources and the generosity to help on a large scale. When it comes to service, you guy deserve to blown your own horn once in awhile.
I hope it goes well and I will pray that all your missionaries stay safe.

Alert | | Most definately. LDS people are indeed some of the nicest, kindest, most loving people I've ever met. Though I don't believe that their opinions are right for me, I will say that when it comes to helping their fellow man, they have been taught well! I wish all Christian churches had the resources available to them as the LDS do, think of all the good that could come | | Whether your riches greater than mine, your mind wiser than mine; you are not above nor below I am your neighbor, I am equal. -Me

Alert | Thanks AuntieEM and tajh for the kind words. We do try but we are not always perfect. But I want to stress here that you cannot necessarily divorce the beliefs and opinions from the people. In other words, we try to be kind and loving because of our teachings. And, if we want to follow that logic through, if our teachings produce such good and kind people, there must be something good and kind in those teachings. The Savior said, "ye shall know them by their fruits..." (Matt. 7:15-23) Thank you for your respect. We are very happy to help when and where we can.

Alert | Today's update:
San Diego 1 November 2007 The Riley family, of Brentwood Street in Lake Arrowhead, California, is one among many families who lost their homes to the ravages of recent wildfires. Brentwood was described as a local street that “lost the battle of the blaze,” and now the Rileys and other people in the community are returning to inspect their losses.
To help them during the inspection, residents were provided a “Five Pack,” a handy combination of useful items for up to five individuals. The packs, prepared by members of the San Bernardino stake Relief Society, the local women’s organization of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, included lip balm, tissues, eyedrops, trash bags, dust masks, baby wipes, granola bars and other items useful to the fire victims in sorting through the debris.
According to local resident Charlene Bradley, “the packs were intended for the evacuees when they return to clean up what may be left of their homes.”
The Riley family distributed 90 packs to their neighbors on Brentwood Street.
Michelle Noel, stake Relief Society president, credited the combined relief efforts of both men and women in the extended San Bernardino area. “It has been a joint effort,” Noel reported. “We will continue to help the victims of the tragic fires.”
To date, the Church has delivered five truckloads of supplies to evacuees in the San Diego area. Blankets and hygiene kits were given to evacuees in the Lake Arrowhead/Running Springs area. Some 13 chapels have been used as temporary shelters over the last week. Nine semi-trucks filled with 16,000 cleaning kits were sent from Salt Lake City to Southern California. Some of them went towards a fake news conference hosted by FEMA a few days ago.
Did anyone see that on TV. Simply incredible! The FEMA manager responsible for it said it was simply an error in judgement. God help us!!

Alert | OKay, I really only wanted to lurk on this thread, but I really feel compelled to say something. While I think it's great that egoettl is updating us on what the LDS people are doing for the fire victims, I find the "horn tooting" a little silly. I understand the need to defend your church/faith/whatever, but is it really necessary? There are lots of organizations that are helping these people, why do we have to make a big deal about this particular organization? Why isn't there a thread saying "boy scout troops collect food for fire victims" or "animal lovers donate pet items for fire victims" To me, each would be equally important and impressive.
I don't think in any one of the LDS threads/discussions that the LDS people personally have been called into question. I think it's more of questioning the church, it's beliefs, background, docterine, practices, etc. I've seen bashing of the church itself, but not of the people. I am not LDS, will never be LDS, but I think that for the most part LDS People are great people (just like any other group of people). (now here is the part that you won't like, I'm sure) It's the CHURCH/FAITH itself that I question. I don't think I've ever seen anyone post that the people are bad.
Perhaps I'm out of line, but if the OP was only posting this to help improve the image on the board, or to show the questioners that they aren't so bad, then I think it's in bad taste.

Alert | Oh, it is a bit of a 'tooting horn' - but doesn't hurt anything, and it only meant to inform people of something that Bgoettl is proud of. I'm proud of it too!
I did get a chuckle out of the "Boy Scouts" - not a bad kind of chuckle (as in at someone's expense), but more of a "what a coinceidence" way - I'm guessing you would have used a different example if you knew The Boy Scouts is the only organization (other than itself) which the LDS church will ask its members to donate to. It is made up of a large amount of LDS boys (the highest of all other religious affiates). Boys are expected to participate - but as all activities, it is not a requirement.
Growing up, boys who wanted to be in Boy Scouts and were NOT LDS, joined the LDS troop - my dad was the Scout leader - which is a calling within the church, just like, Sunday School Teacher, or Bishop, etc.
I do understand your point. I truly believe most members do not feel people are against the church for their 'service' or lack there-of, but as you said more because of the actual beliefs. . . I also would LOVE to hear about what churches are doing within and outside of the community. I know there is a lot of service going on that we DON'T hear about, I wish others would "toot their horn".

Alert | Only $900 million in 21 years for a church that earns 4 billion non-taxed dollars per year? That is a drop in the bucket compared to all the money the mormon church earns annually. Start sharing the true gospel of Jesus Christ then show some numbers. All the money in the world won't help all the people your religion is leading away from the truth.
