While I may be risking the start of yet another Mormon bashing thread...I did feel that I should set the record straight so that it's not based on what someone heard. This has nothing to do with Blacks not going to heaven. That has never been a belief of the LDS Church. It was that prior to 1978 male men of black African lineage were not ordained to the priesthood. That being said, no male member (white or black) is ordained to the priesthood unless they are worthy of it. Again...this had nothing to do with whether Blacks would go to heaven. One of the core LDS articles of faith is that "man will be punished for their OWN sins", so obviously not based on race.

If you would like to know more, I would recommend going to the source: http://lds.org/portal/site/LDSOrg/menuitem.4f1443e41e77d6702f5da6a4e44916a0/?vgnextoid=76bd3f7719605010VgnVCM1000004e94610aRCRD&locale=0&index=16

At this link there is a topic called "Priesthood Ordination before 1978." Incidently, there is a link to learn more about polygamy as well.

Feel free to bash these topics all you want as this is an open forum. Rest assured, I do not plan to keep any kind of argument going. I'm just passing on the correct information that was requested. :-)

God bless.

Qwerty, I really do appreciate you posting. I will read more about. I was eager to post b/c like I said it was the way he said it.
I was looking for facts not an argument.
Thank you.

That's like asking, "I heard Hindus smelled bad" is this true? Obviously you're going to get people up on the offensive.

Here's the story on dark skinned people and their inferior place in the LDS faith.....

People of Native American heritage are supposed to be descendents of Laman; Nephi's evil brother in the Book of Mormon. Their skin was darkened, according to the Book of Mormon, so they could be identified as his descendents. In fact, there was a period back in the late 70s and early 80s where LDS families were encouraged to take on "Lamanite" children as either adopted children or as foster children. It was all the rage. It was really pretty condescending in hindsight. It was to bring them into LDS homes so they could embrace their heritage and return to the light. At any rate, people of Native American heritage are referred to as Lamanites within the LDS faith.

People of black African heritage are supposed to be the descendents of Cain; Abel's evil brother in the Bible who killed him. Their skin was darkened, according to the Bible, so they could be identified as his descendents.

People of black African heritage in the LDS faith were denied the priesthood, until it became politically expedient for the Church to grant it to them. This followed closely on the heels of the Civil Rights Movement. This is very similar to the Church's reversal on their position regarding polygamy. Until it became politically expedient - Utah was not going to be granted statehood until they did away with polygamy - the LDS church fully embraced it as one of the tenets of the faith. In both cases, until it was politically expedient, the "tenets" regarding people of black African heritage and polygamy were touted as the word of God. An abrupt reversal in this position followed once it was clear it would not behoove the Church politically to continue with these policies.

Let me know if you have any further questions. I'll try to answer them for you.

If you are looking for unbiased answers this website is pretty decent one -

The markings of different races which Cletus describes is correct. However we don't walk around at church calling Native Americans Lamanites - nor do we refer to them that way among ourselves. The same way we don't walk around calling African Americans Cananites.

I remember when I was growing up and watching college football with my parents. They told me that we never would be fans of or support BYU sports because they didn't allow black people to attend their university. This was in the mid-1970's. Even as a child, I was shocked.

I recently asked one of my mormom co-workers about this, and he didn't know a thing about it. This guy was a missionary and is some sort of leader in his ward/stake/whatever...and HE DIDN'T KNOW THE HISTORY OF HIS RELIGION!

Scary....very scary.

But yes, the church has changed their position and now let blacks into the priesthood and into their schools. Guess they felt they needed to increase the number of tithe-paying members, since all the dead people they baptize post-mortem don't have bank accounts
