Aug. 20-27, 2007 issue - In one of history's more absurd acts of totalitarianism, China has banned Buddhist monks in Tibet from reincarnating without government permission. According to a statement issued by the State Administration for Religious Affairs, the law, which goes into effect next month and strictly stipulates the procedures by which one is to reincarnate, is "an important move to institutionalize management of reincarnation." But beyond the irony lies China's true motive: to cut off the influence of the Dalai Lama, Tibet's exiled spiritual and political leader, and to quell the region's Buddhist religious establishment more than 50 years after China invaded the small Himalayan country

Alert | ROFLMAO!
I don't think any government can "regulate reincarnation" if it exists. I do know if it does exist, I want to be reincarnated as one of my cats. Here's their lives: Eat a treat, wrestle a little, sleep on beanbag chair. Eat a little more, drink some water, nap some more. Chase occasional "sun lint". What a life! *smile* | | <---Look, Ma! Alert | This is absurd, but it isn't funny. China harms people who embrace religion, any religion, and they are setting up bogus laws so that they can legally persecute them for crimes that they cannot prove. That's the scary part, folks. Can they now jail someone for having reincarnated without permission?
It cracks me up when Christians whine about religious persecution in the US. | | Poster formerly known as Sassafrass.

Alert | | Religious persecution goes under a different name in the US: freedom from religion. Just because we're not tortured, does not mean there are not growing numbers of people that would like to see Christianity wiped out. | | Joined: Jul 2005

I'm sorry, TheBoymaker. To be honest, I wasn't thinking about the political...and more importantly, individual HUMAN...implication of this law. It was late, I was tired, and it struck me as funny as well as absurd at the time. Now, I see your point. Please accept my apology for making light of a serious subject, and for opening my eyes. | | <---Look, Ma! I sit, I stay, I match the carpet!

Alert | | I didn't mean to sound preachy. It just that the first thing that came to my thoughts is what I have heard over the years about how Christians are targeted by the Chinese government. These are brutal people. And now they are creating laws that they can charge people with breaking when there is no way to defend themselves! That's inhuman. | | Poster formerly known as Sassafrass.
