Alert | I've been reading the "hell" thread. I didn't want to thread-jack, so I thought I'd start my own.
What, exactly, is heaven? Rolling around on a cloud with a bunch of chubby cherubs and doing nothing but playing "Onward Christian Soldiers" on the harp all day sounds pretty hellish to me. Or, is heaven anything you imagine it to be? And, if so, therein lies the rub. What if what you imagine heaven to be would be considered a sin by other faiths? For example, there would definitely be wine in "my blue heaven" (dare I try to quote the Bible by saying Jesus himself said, "I shall not drink of the fruit of the vine again until I have it in my Father's house"). But some Christian sects consider consuming alcohol a sin, so...
And I'm pretty sure Bill Clinton's idea of heaven would involve interns and cigars.
Hell's a little easier. I personally think we create it for each other here on earth. But if it were an actual locale, I think the ancient Greeks had it right with their myth of Tantalis. Imagine what you wanted/needed the most - be it your beloved or your child, your most cherished treasure, etc., etc., - being in sight constantly, but constantly out of your reach. That would be pretty hellish.
If I had a heaven, it would involve chocolate that didn't make you fat (uh-oh, gluttony, one of the big seven), wine that made you silly but not sick, and oodles upon oodles of sunshine, fields, games, and cute guys (uh-oh, lust, another biggy on the sin list).
My hell would be all that stuff - always in sight, and always out of reach. So I'm curious...what's your idea of heaven? Of hell? I ask this genuinely, as part of my journey of learning. | | "Ain't nothin' but a barn dance, sugar. Ain't nothin' but a round de round" - Sara Tidwell and the High Tops

Alert | | i think that each organized religion has an idea of what each are like. I don't affiliate with any particular religion, but i have my own ideas of what they may be like. and nobody will know for sure until we get there! | | If you can't spot the loser, it might be you

Alert | Hell is a place where you're chained to a la-z-boy chair and some woman keeps yelling at you constantly forever and ever.
Heaven is like Hell but with a "mute" button.
"Heaven has no rage like love to hatred turned; nor Hell a fury like a woman scorned." (William Congreve, 1697) Just one of many interpretations of Heaven & Hell.

Alert | really, its all make believe, in order to get you to do what the ones in control want you to, and to scare you into thinking that if you dont, you will suffer. nothing more. read up on some human history, its all there. but my official answer is: lets all go to hell. thats where all of my friends will be, and im sure its gonna be the biggest/best party ever imagined. (and me and my friends know how to party!!!!)

Alert | The Bible says that Heaven's splendors are beyond our comprehension, and that Hell is a place that the demons fear to go.
Luke 8:30-31 30Jesus asked him, "What is your name?"
"Legion," he replied, because many demons had gone into him. 31And they begged him repeatedly not to order them to go into the Abyss.

This is the kind of response that I hear a lot. Would you want to go to prison because "all your friends are there"?
Hell is a place of complete isolation, with just you and your suffering.
Why anyone would think that they get to hang out and make friends there is just beyond me.
I guess the opposite is true for heaven as well. People think that there are many ways to get in and we can all do our own thing and get in our own way. This is ridiculous. Can you walk up to the White House and mosey in any way you want? Why then would you presume that heaven is any easier to get into?
I suppose you can also think of getting into heaven as getting into an exclusive night club. Jesus is the bouncer to the only door in the place. He has a list of people that He knows. You can't buddy up to Him at the door, or try to bribe Him.
Unless He knows you, not the other way around, you're not getting in. Period.

Alert | Hell to me would be....Only accomplishing the same thing over and over..never doing something new, or learning something new.
Heaven would be a place where you learn, accomplish, and grow in knowledge of what your creator wants for yourself, and others around you.

Alert | Jessica Lunsford. That is a great picture of Heaven and Hell. She was taken from her warm bed and tied up, raped and buried alive. That was Hell on earth. When she eventually died, she was no loger bound nor buried. To her, that must have been heaven. Hell is easier to describe than heaven. Hell is whatever your worst fears are. If you where in a place where you could get everything you want, woudn't that become a hell?
Heaven is... Well, you know... a great place...
To me, heaven is a place where you are challenged every day and you can overcome your difficulties and feel accomplishments with the ability to teach others on how to do similar. What if this IS heaven? :
Remember that dog heaven is also squirrell Hell.
The simple answer is that I don't know. | | Let X=X

Alert | Hmmm.
I imagine Heaven as being a place without pain, where God is visible, and where things make sense. I'd like to think that family members who have died before me will be there, but they weren't Christians so they would need a different kind of grace than what I received. I'm open to the possibility of that.
I imagine Hell as being a place without faith, hope or love. I imagine it to be a place of terrible guilt, loneliness and fear, where God is absent | | Poster formerly known as Sassafrass.
