In the Vatican newspaper (5/13/08) the director of the Vatican observatory said that the existence of other intelligent life ". . . does not conflict with our faith . . .." This idea brings up many interesting questions. Comments?

Ok, I have to ask. Which religions would have an issue with life existing on another planet somewhere in the universe?

No idea, but I bet there are some. After all it was just 500 years or so ago that Galileo was in danger of being burned for disputing the church's crystal spheres.

Somehow some people have taken the Bible to mean that God only created life on Earth. It's not incompatible with Christianity, but some people view it that way.

What made them come out and state this? Did aliens land and I not know it?

It was part of an interview with the Jesuit director of the Vatican Observatory, in which he discussed astronomy. He also stated that the Big Bang theory is compatible with Catholic teaching. A big change from the days of Galileo.

Yes this is big change. I think Jason's statement "Somehow some people have taken the Bible to mean that God only created life on Earth". I think this goes to the narrow-minded people that use up space on this planet. Maybe we can trade them for some smart Aliens from somewhere?.

A Jesiut Priest invented the BBT, so it should not really be that much of a shock.

Also Galileo did not go to jail for his scientific thoughts, but for his actions, there were other science based religous orders that were studying heliocentrism within the Church before Galieo every started up the works of Copernicus.

Religious or not, it would be kind of depressing that in this vast universe that surrounds us that nothing else is out there. I would find it interesting to learn of a religion that is conceded enough to say that we (on earth) are the only living beings in creation.
