02/10/2008 10:48 AM Alert

My 8 yr old dog developed cherry eye, seemingly overnight.  I've taken him to the vet and she gave me a steroid ointment to put in his eye several times a day. I've never seen my dog looking like this, so it's a bit difficult. I'm worrying for him a lot.

Is there anything I can do? Something I can give him? What I read says surgery is the only option to repair it. Is that true?  If so, has someone seen a vet that does a good job with that?

Thanks for any help.

Schokolotti   My daughters dog had this years ago, and we took her to Casa Grande Animal Hospital.  She did have surgery and it was very successful.  If I remember right, they kept her overnight though.

I hope everything works out well.  It is certainly heart wrenching when our pets hurt.

I have a 21 year old cat, that I bottle fed from a newborn, because mommy disappeared.  He is deaf, real wobbely when he walks, sleeps most of the day.  I know it's time for me to let him go, and selfish of me not too. I don't want to wait too long that he is pain.

Drawing that fine line is the tough part.  Good luck to your loved pet, and I would get that second opinion!

I am sorry to hear about you both of your pets. Hang in there Granny!

Schokolotti, Many years ago we had the surgery done on our cocker spaniel. This was up north, but i recall the proceedure went very well and was the best thing we could do for her. She looked much better and healthier. She healed well and it did not seem like she needed to much after care. I do not remember them giving us eyedrops for the condition. So maybe this will help and you wont need to do the surgery.
Good luck

Cherry eye is when the gland of the third eyelid pops out a little and forms a small bulb of reddish-pink tissue - hence the name "cherry eye". It is nasty to look at and I can imagine what the poor dog is feeling. When I was in the field several years ago, the only treatment was surgery, but that may have changed since then, I don't know. It is a very successful surgery in most cases and the dog will usually be back to normal very quickly. The gland just needs to be stitched back down, if I remember correctly. Do have a vet take care of that for you, it has to be very uncomfortable and I seem to remember that if left too long can cause drying of that gland. (?) Hope that helps!

From what I'm told, if caught early it can sometimes be cured/fixed with the eye drops, always better to try non-invasive measures first, IMHO.

The red head is BACK!! (and still mouthy)

So, I just wanted to update you all.

I was putting the ointment in my dog's eye twice daily, but it didn't seem to be helping at all. Thursday night, he started rubbing and scratching his eye like he never has before. It concerned me so much I went to get his cone collar, to prevent him from doing this further. As I was putting it on I saw that the cherry eye had gone away. It had just been there 5 minutes before that. I think my dog fixed his own eye. It was still red that night, but the next morning and ever since his eye looks as normal as ever before the cherry eye.

Thanks for all your input and insights.
