 Alert | My dog just doesn't seem to be getting it. Before we got her crate, she would go right outside in the morning and do her business. Now that we're trying crate training, I take her out on a leash to her "Spot" and she won't go! It took her 5 minutes just to go pee and 20 minutes later still no bowel movement. I walk inside, she runs in the corner and goes!
What am I doing wrong? We take her out frequently but the second she comes back inside she goes on our carpet. | | | |

Alert | Potty training sucks.
Just keep being consistent and watching her ALL of the time while she is roaming the house. Anytime you see her wandering, looking suspicious, take her out. When she does go potty outside be sure to praise her. Some dogs pick it up quicker than others.
My parents used the "potty pads" and they loved them and said that they worked very well for their pup.

Alert | Couldn't agree more. Potty training sucks!
Good advice from bgrafk. Be consistent. Be patient. The smaller the dog, the harder the time w/ potty training usually. Say the same thing over & over as you're trying to get her to "go." We always use "c'mon, go potty outside" and keep repeating it until the dog does their business, when they do go, make it the BEST THING IN THE WORLD! Lots of praise & a nice fattening treat help to get the point across quickly. | | | |

Alert | | Also, get some carpet spot cleaner and clean the one spot she goes in well, I have a small spot carpet cleaner you can borrow, then spray the area with Bitter Apple. That area has her scent and she'll keep going back there until you remove the scent and make it a not fun place to go. | |

Alert | | Woolight OXY clean carpet cleaner is awesome, spray and it disappears, no rubbing. I just bought a scat mat to try to keep the yorkies off one area, then I am going to move it. As Kim knows mine is a hopeless cause. they now pee pee on the pads (most of the time) but they are sneak poopers. | | | |

Alert | | Don't give up on the crate training!! I am so glad my dogs are crate trained. also make sure the crate is small enough for the dog so that she/he can only turn around. I have the life stages med crate if you need the "wall" to make yours smaller I can lend you mine wall. | | | |

Alert | Thanks for the replies! We have a crate for her, and yes it's barely big enough for her to move in it. She doesn't just go in one spot, its ALL over the house 
I've decided I don't know what the heck I'm doing so we hired a trainer. We had an hour session and I absolutely love her! In 2 days I can see improvements.

Alert | Do you have info for the trainer? My dog is MOSTLY house trained, but still likes to leave little spots sometimes, and if we let him roam the house at night or while we are not around, he tends to poop inside too. We can't catch him in the act, so it's hard to scold. I was hoping to be able to get in touch with a dog trainer in the area to see if we can help him.
