What does it take to start/open a no kill animal shelter? I am seriously thinking of getting involved in a project like this and just need some sources and information.

It is admirable thought. The most important thing is money. Many of us have the space, time and knowlege to commit to such a thing. But the reality is the cost. It costs me nearly $100 a week to feed the healthy dogs that I have. The rescue horses that I have here cost more a week to feed. Volunteers are another thing. People to help feed, groom, walk/exercise, drive to vet appointments and someone that is good at pulling in donations (I am unable to solict funds for the animals-it's not in my nature).

I wish you good luck and I am sure some of the other rescue organizations will be able to help with other suggestions. But Equine Eden Horse Rescue closed it's doors due to the lack of funding. Honestly, there are many more homeless small pets out there than horses.

You may be better off getting with some of the other established orgainzations and helping thme be great. Let me know if I can be of any other assistance.

space, money, time & an approved kennel license

Eventually I'd like to have a dog santuary in Hidden Valley but there is much more research to be done & considerations to be made. Many no-kill shelters out there are actually quite sad - the dogs are kept in cages or kennels all day long & literaly "go crazy" from the lack of interaction from people and/or other animals. I'm sure those places started out w/ good intentions & a lot of heart and soul, but the thought of them & the videos I've seen just make me want to cry. It's a HUGE undertaking, one that I can't see in my near future at this point, but maybe in the future.

I'd be glad to assist in your endeavor as well. You know how to find me.

I've recently written an "article" on what you need to know to start a rescue. If you're interested in reading it I can email it to you.

Okay so it seem the shelter is a bit off. What are the needs for Maricopa? Day camp? I feel there is a need here and now is a perfect time to start acting.

What would other animal enthusiasts suggest for Maricopa other than the dog park. Already working on that with Java and others.

Ahh, a topic I'd love to see come to life! I'd like to see an organized group or coop that caters to animals and their people- we have groomers, trainers, feed stores, etc. However, there is no "one stop" shop to access services. I'm not suggesting a box store, rather an organized group of individuals who provide services in one location. Especially in the area of training, we have local trainers but no setting that provides socialization classes or advanced training (i.e, canine good citizen, agility, etc.). I'm not sure how many others are interested in feeding raw/homemade but this is something else I'm interested in. Expanding on PSW's (and other good Samaritan's) efforts for the area stray population is a growing concern. Making it a concerted effort to educate the public, house these critters, find their owners and, when necessary, rehome them. So, if there is a group of people really interested and dedicated to improving the lives of Maricopa's critter population, I'm willing to help in anyway I can!

If you are interested contact Cactus Cats from Petco. Those ladies are there every weekend. They could give you some insite on how to get a no kill shelter going. Or contact online Best Friends out of Utah. They are very informative. I am in need of a home for my little special needs kitty I found abandoned in the Foothills. She requires much needed care that I don't have the time for. I already have 3 kitties and two kids. I love the little girl she is so sweet. She is a pure bread blue point siamese and so very loving. She purrs the moment you look into her big blue eyes. She is finially house broken, however, she has marked 2 spots in my home and I am afraid to let her have the run of the house now. When she was found she had the habit of going outdoors and I can't leave her outside due to the heat and she is deaf and declawed. If I left her out a cyote could get her. Anyway... if you open a shelter or know of one starting I need help in finding my little blue eyed girl a good loving home! pm me if you know of anyone who would love to have her.

Live every day as if it were your last and smile!

colgate: does your kitty like dogs? she sounds wonderful. i have 2 cat friendly dogs and wonder if she might be a good fit for us here. also a concern, i am 30 weeks pregnant and i am not sure i could take her before i deliver. my fiance is a great guy, but if i am going to take on a special needs kitty, i feel that i should be the one doing the work, including the litterbox, and i cannot do that preggo.

trajanbear: i'd be interested in talking to you further about the day camp idea. pkat i had talked about it briefly a few months back, we both see a big need for it in maricopa and i may have the property for it. i live behind the dairy queen in old maricopa and my lot is already zoned for future commercial use, so that part is not an issue. i don't believe my neighbors would put up any kind of a stink, on one side i am quite friendly with the neighbors and on the other, they have a herd of like 8 chihuahuas themselves, so they have no room to complain. i think the location is good, being right in town for easy drop off. to set one up outside of town (hidden valley, etc.) i think you would automatically rule out people who did not want to take the extra time in the mornings to get the critters there. unless you did a pick up and drop off service, which is a whole nother kettle of fish! we are expecting our first child at the beginning of october, and i have been looking for work that will allow me to stay home with him during the day. while i realize that with an infant to care for, i would not be able to handle a group of dogs by myself everyday, i also have a fiance who is currently quite under employed. i think this could work out. as you can see, i have spent some time thinking about this, but am not sure where to go from here. if you or anyone else would like to talk further about this, that would be great. i am PMing you my phone number, and if anyone else would like it to, just let me know, i'll PM to you too.

On a related topic...temp foster home needed for 2 strays...pittie type...young females one is in season...very friendly...probably full grown...either sisters or mother and daughter...they are big dogs...up/airplane ears...probably rez dogs or were dumped...we have them outside here at work...they have been given water and have decided this is the place to be, at least for right now. We are a government facility and they can't stay here! We checked with the locals and none of them are feeding these 2.

Any takers?

Anyone?

Thanks to everyone for your thoughts and ideas. I have been out of town and definitely not ignoring your responses.

Nursiegurl - I too was thinking of a one stop service oriented group while on the plane this afternoon. There is so much talent and to incorporate that would be great. I would love to talk to you about this more and start developing a plan. I will pm you my number - I think you might already have it but will share again.

Demonica - I like your idea too. I need to look into the article nursiegurl sent to see the pros and cons and ups and downs of a no kill shelter.

Thanks again for all the responses. Keep em coming so the juices will keep flowing.

Hmm....to quote "no setting that provides socialization classes or advanced training (i.e, canine good citizen, agility, etc.)"

Last I checked I was able to provide training for agility, LGC, conformation, therapy assist certification prep, search and rescue prep, (I can go on, but I think you get the picture) The thing is, I have had no one call me in reference to any of these sorts of things. I prefer not to advertize/market since referrals and such keep my busy enough, but I know my conact info usually follows any inquiry on 85239 regarding any training post here along with Troy's info. I do not do the follow types of training (Hunting ...I'm not into the whole killing thing...Hearding...I don't have any flocks or heards to develope this skill despite my in-depth experience with a majority of the most popular hearding breed like the Aussie, Queensland, ect..ect...and Protection...despite a ton of experience in protection dog training also including working ith police k9 units in the past and having good friend who are wayyy into the protection aspect of dog training I do not provide this due to lack of proper intent by the owners and due to liability.

A bit of background...I was about 3 weeks away from breaking ground with the help of some past investors/personal friends on a canine daycare/boarding/training facility in Tukee...but then Petsmart shut down half it's store and opened the nightmare...I mean Petsmart hotel...so that dream was put on hold and with a baby on the way...it will continue to be on hold. I have not been up to date on a ton of info...but I would suggest thouse of you serious about a no kill sheter look into options such as Maddie's Fund, also, they havd a PDF that provides in depth articles on shelter operations and stats from communites accross the country. here are the links an tons others out there as well. Good luck! =)
