Does anyone have any problems with their tortoises hibernating in our more than warm winters?

My friend has a baby desert tortoise but it hasn't gone into its first hibernation yet. Her roommate has had "older" desert tortoises in the past. I remember him mentioning that they would come out of their burrow only when they were hungry most of the time??

My tortoise doesn't have any problems hybernating in the winter. When it gets cold he just comes onto the back patio & goes into his carrier. He'll stay there until one of 2 things happens. 1. it rains alot & he needs a drink or 2. it warms up over 90 degrees. I take him to a hybernation clinic at my vets office who will make sure he doesn't have any parasites that would kill him. Let me know if you are interested in taking your tortoise to the vet & I can get you the information. Have you had your tortoise long? We've had ours for 13 years now & even though we tried to make him a habitat burrow he just loves hybernating on the back patio. My vet says just provide protection from wind & rain & he'll be just fine. So far so good.

Thanks!

Do you take him to a special vet?

We've had ours for almost two years, but they are about six years old.

Dr. Cromer is just a regular vet who sees all sorts of animals. He's really personable. My tortoise has been hybernating since the end of October beginning of November. He's on the back patio in an old lined grill cover. How's yours? Now, if it rains alot in January or February mine will come out for a drink, then fall asleep out in the open. I always have to double check to make sure he gets back to the grill cover. Let me know if you need any more info.
