We adopted a 4mo pup yesterday and as soon as we got home took her outside and she peed. Good dog. Stayed outside with her for about 15 mins and when we went inside she immediatly pooped. Not solid either. (Here I would like to thank the person that invented the steam cleaner.)

Anyways...
We are starting the crate training process for the first time and jsut wondering how long this needs to be done typically. She did well thru the night. We let her out twice during hte night to do the duty and she did each time. How long before most dogs figure out that outside is the place to go? We have a doggy door so hopefully she'll get the idea soon. She has 2 other dogs to teach her as well.

Sometimes can depend on the breed, but we typically crated our dogs for 6mos - 1 year. With our beagle (beagles are notoriously hard to potty train) we crated for 2 years.

Here's a good link that I give every new puppy owner:

Congrats on the new pup!!!

Also know that less than solid poops accidents usually can't be prevented. Add a few spoonfuls of canned pumpkin, not pumpkin pie mix, but canned pumpkin to her food.. If that doesn't help fast her for a day and feed small meals of rice and boiled chicken with the pumpkin. Slowly add kibbles back in over a couple days or so.

Make sure when she does her business outside you make it the BEST THING EVER! Over the top praise... lots of love and the baby voice a LOT... good luck! I'm house training a foster greyhound right now, too.

Tens of THOUSANDS of pure-bred dogs are killed in shelters in the Us EVERY YEAR!

Ditto on Jillys advice on making it thhe best thing ever...a litle goes a long way...a lot goes even further. Initially you may fee a bit goofy...but you will soon be the goofy person with the clean rug...
