Patton has become quite the backyard barker.
Ever since we got the backyard done, he has realized there are dogs behind our house, and they are making him crazy. He is out there barking like a nutcase.
I go out there and bring him inside, but its making me nuts.

Here is my question:
1.) I will not use a shock collar on him. However, JillyBean told me about using a citronella collar as a deterrent. Has anyone else used this?

2.) He also has started jumping on people and barking in the house. My mother was telling me that she uses a high pitched device that she presses a button, and it produces this sound that the dog hates. The dog will stop the bad behavior. It works wonders with my mother's dog. Lucy is a jumper, and loves to jump all over people. All my mom does now is pick up the little device, and Lucy sits quietly.

Is that humane? I'm really at my wits end with Patton's bad behavior. I've tried obedience training, but I cannot even get his attention when he's focused on something else and barking or jumping. If I can get his attention, he'll at least listen to me.

I'm thinking the noise device- its something I can control. Heck, I might get both.

I love this dog to pieces, but he makes me nuts.

I'd try the noise thing. Most of the ones that produce a noise, produce a sound that is irritating but not harmful.

Good luck.

The citronella collar didn't work for two people I know. The only thing that worked for my mom's dog was the shock collar. All she had to do was put in a few times and it worked, after that she took out the battery of it and just shows it to her dog and it will stop barking. She will even put it on her dog without a battery and the dog won't bark. I have that high pitched noise "Cat Scram" for my cat, so she won't go out the dog door, and it works wonders. It is not meant to work for dogs, but my mom had that high pitched noise box for dogs and it doesn't work for her dog.

Shock collars are very effective, but they just make me sad.

Funny story (but not so funny if the dog had the collar on her neck!) :
Recently I was walking a dog that wears a shock collar for her invisible fence. I have to remember to take it off her before we head down the driveway. If I forget, she's SURE to let me know. A few weeks ago, I forgot to take it off her & as we headed out the door, she pulled back to let me know to removed the collar. I decided instead of walking back inside (about 4 feet - I'm SO lazy!) that I'd just carry it w/ us!!! Wow, could I be more of a bonehead.....anyway, as we exited the yard, that thing shocked my hand so hard that my hand & arm tingled for hours! I can not believe what that must feel like on a dogs throat.

I am NOT putting a shock collar on Patton.
Greyhounds are extremely sensitive beings- and I know if I were to shock him, he'll never come near me again. Also, greyhounds have thinner skin than any other dog, so I am more concerned about injury to him.
I am NOT shocking my dog.
I'm currently looking at using a noise-based item - we're researching, now.

My dad tried the bark shock collar on his lab. She barked, got shocked, shook her head, barked again, got shocked again then sat there and growled to set it off, got upset when he took it off, she LIKED it.

The red head is BACK!! (and still mouthy)
