Well, we just got home from First Regional Animal Hospital. My husband put our Jack Russell out to go potty. Before he could even see what she had, she picked up a Bufo toad and proceeded to chew on it. He came in the house to get a flashlight and tell me to come see the size of the toad Kalie had. Uh oh. I knew exactly what was about to happen.

If you've never experienced a dog with toad poisoning - OH MY GOD! Within two minutes she was seizing, yelping (actually screaming), her heart was beating too fast for me to count and trembling violently.

All the while I'm rinsing her mouth under the faucet, again and again. I yell at my husband to grab the toad in a bag, get the car and lets go. I thought the dog was about to die.

I filled a big soup kettle with water and kept rinsing her mouth the whole trip to Chandler - 36 miles away. You should see the car - it's trashed, water and wet towels everywhere. To all of you drivers on the 347 - thank you for NOT GETTING OUT OF THE WAY! We're trying desperately to get around construction to go as fast as we can. VERY FAST. Verry, very fast. And the whole way, the dog is trembling violently.

The vets were great - took her right in and started an IV with Valium to calm her down. Her pulse was over 200 when we arrived, resp 80. Scary. After a couple of hours,we're home now - throwing up every few minutes but much better.

Long story short - keep an eye out for the damned toads. If they do get one, rinse their mouths out as much as you can to flush the poison. It was SCARY!

Baking soda will neutralize the acid based poison and save a trip to the DR. Use handfuls and keep putting it in the mouth.

Brains, nerve and beauty all in one package! A win win for the Republicans!

How scary! I'm so glad she is doing better. I too own a Jack Russell and know how fast they can get themselves into trouble. Hoping she is back to her terrier self soon

I have 2 little dogs that will put anything in their mouths! We've seen 1 toad around our house, are there different kinds here in Maricopa? Will they all have the same effect on animals? We haven't seen the toad in about a month...

I also heard that evaporated milk works to reverse the toxin. True? I have never heard of symptoms that bad.

You know, we have dozens of these things coming out every night. They go after the bugs that go after the patio light. The dogs just ignore them. I wonder if it's just that certain dogs get curious or what?

Funny thing happened.

I bought a frog/toad gig and wife gave me cheap mop handle to put it on. Ok, so far so good.

giged one or two small ones and removed the gig.

So now I see a big one and squarely, very deeply, gig the Toad across the body. he breaks the cheap handle and hops into the black shadows and now no Toad and cannot find my gig which is stuck in his body..<img src='http://www.85239.com/desktopmodules/ntforums/images/emoticons/hehe.gif' height='20' width='20' border='0' title='HeHe' align='absmiddle'>

LOLOLOLOLOL!
We used to gig frogs in Florida. I love sauted froglegs

Update on Kalie: she vomited most of the night and is sleeping off the effects of the toad/valium. The vet said if I hadn't have flushed her mouth and continued to flush while we were speeding to the hospital she might have died from the violent reaction she had to the toxins.

Unfortunately, Jack Russells have an over abundancy for bravery, tenacity and curiosity. They seem to lack the avoid dangerous situations gene! When we let her out to potty this morning, the first place she headed was where she last saw the toad!!!

I doubt she has learned her lesson.

I had one in my backyard a while back...and my dogs wouldn't touch it.

I ended up splattering that toad's brain, with a shovel. So, so much blood.

It's cruel to mistreat these creatures. I have been gathering them up by the dozens and dropping them off in Rancho El Dorado on the way to work each morning. I think I will start leaving a few in Acacia Crossings so that I don't overpopulate RED.

Saw a toad in a backyard in RED yesterday & one in Senita this AM.

The one from RED must have been hand delivered by DD - thanks! It was only a block from my home & dogs!

What do they look like? I had a large one in the pool last week swimming around like he owned the damned thing! I was able to fish him out with the net and flung him over the wall into the desert. Hope he doesn't come back, I have 4 very courious doggies.
Pictures anyone?

Here ya go, Jerseygirl:

Kimberly, I dropped this mornings' batch off in Cobblestone just after I cut through the Ace Hardware parking lot. They love the splash pad.

tee hee DD.

We had one in our backyard about 6 weeks ago or so. My husband was totally freaked out - funny to see a big guy freaked out about a toad. I too flung him over the wall into the desert. Tried to fling softly to avoid harm but I certainly wasn't leaving him in my yard.

Remember though when rinsing the mouth with water keep the head dow so the water comes back out of the mouth.

I had a huge one on my porch last night. I sent it into the street. Does anyone know the best way to kill them? I would feel better killing them, I just don't want a mess. Cinder block on the head maybe? Are they around all year or only after rain? A while back during monsoon, there were tiny frogs in my front yard that I squished like crickets but I'm not sure what to do with one the size of a football. No stupid frog will kill my dog.

We've always had lots of the in the yard. They like swimming in the pool. We too use the flinging method of disposal. BUT not gently. It's sorta like playing lacrosse - fling the toad as hard as you can. The winner is the one who scores the most bounces!

Be prepared if you drop the cinderblock to clean up a BIG mess. They contain more guts on the inside than appears from the outside

UPDATE on the toad eating pooch:
She's fully recovered. She spent several days lying around very listless. That plus two weeks of eye drops and antibiotics from scratching her cornea in 3 places. Grand total cost of a toad... about $600

you can get a frog gig on ebay w/o handle for about 5 bucks. works great.

mind you the big ones will not die right away so have a bag ready to put them in.
