Alert | how do i get the darned puppy to stop piddling in the house? we had a dog door installed this week, and he goes in and out of it freely, but still will only pee outside if someone takes him out. we take him out A LOT and he pees maybe 1/3 of the time. we are doing well on the pooping, cuz he gives us lots of "poop signs" but with peeing, he gives no warning at all, just stands up and lets loose. we praise him lavishly when he goes outside, we praise the 5 year old dog now too for going in the yard, even though she has been potty trained for years, at which point she looks at us like we've lost our minds! i'm getting a little frustrated. any advice would be greatly appreciated.
BTW, anyone have a carpet shampooer i can borrow?

Alert | | thanks kimberly, he actually is starting to follow her lead. far less accidents this week than last week. and we got a carpet shampooer this week, which makes the accidents seem like much less of a crisis. i'm a fan of crate training myself, at least during puppyhood. joey however is not, and as they say, ya gotta pick your battles. with nick coming, i figure we'll have enough disagreements about child rearing. as long as max is improving every week and i have a way now to get the stains up, i'm not gonna press this one. i gotta say, other than that he is a pretty teriffic puppy. although he is probably the most vocal dog i have ever had. he talks to us and talks to cow, he's even got cow talking back to him now, it's cute.

Alert | We just got a new puppy on Sunday. According to the breeder, they hadn't started potty training yet (he is 5 months old). We got him home, and he goes really well outside. We only had 2 accidents inside. We are crate training, but he does go in the crate sometimes (about 1/2 the time). I took him to the vet for a complete checkup, and updated shots. Now the poor thing has diarrhea. He has had it all day today. I took him back to the vet to be rechecked, partly because of all the parvo going around, but he is fine. They said it was probably just stress from going to the vet, getting shots and stuff. But along with the diarrhea, he is piddling in the house.
Any one have any suggestions? I know potty training can be a long process, and it's only been 4 days that we've had him. I am new to puppy-ownership, and curious as to how long it typically takes to potty train.
Also, any suggestions on the diarrhea? I have heard from others that 1/2 tsp of Pepto will work, but still a little unsure. He is drinking just fine.

Alert | I am also having a horrible time with the housebreaking our puppy. I am trying crate training but she just cries and cries all night and inevitably poops in her kennel and gets it all over her.
But with the diarrhea I was told by our vet that you can give them 1/4 tablet of pepcid 10mg every 12 hours for 7 days.

Alert | Maybe cook up some rice to mix in w/ the puppy food too. That will help w/ the diarrhea.

Here is some VERY well written notes from another poster on another Maricopa Forum that may be helpful too. From Jillybean:
Potty Training 101: This only works with dogs who are part of the family and who live inside with the family except when they go outside to potty.
You will need a "high value" treat.. something amazing to them.. like cheese or a small bite of hot dog, or a bit of liverwurst. The dogs will only get this wonderful treat when they do their business outside.
Get a flash light. You will need to go outside with the dogs each and EVERY time you let them outside to relieve themselves. Even at night.
When you let them outside, watch them and when they start to 'go' tell them in a sweet, but quiet voice "gooood potty" (or whatever word you want to use, but be consistent with it). When they complete their business, make it a HUGE deal.. clap and yell (in a high pitched voice) and them them what a good dog they are.. make sure they get the super yummy treat within a couple of second after finishing their business.
If you find an accident in the house, ignore it.. Clean it up they way you normally would and make sure to use an enzymatic cleaner, like Nature's Miracle.
If you catch them in the actual act inside.. don't freak out. Just say, in a stern voice "NO!" (You don't need to yell to get your point across) and tell them "Outside" and take them outside. Follow the above advice for when they potty outside.
Do NOT, under and circumstances, hit your dog or rub the dog's nose in their mess. This does NOT work and only teaches your dog to be afraid of you. Correction only works if you catch them in the act.. after a few seconds the connection is lost in their brain and they don't understand what they're being corrected for.
Keep up with these steps for a MINIMUM of 4 weeks after the last accident. If they dog has another accident, start the 4 week period over again.
This has worked for me with all my hounds as well as my numerous foster dogs.
Keep in mind, the smaller the dog, the smaller the brain, the longer it takes and the more difficult the process.

Alert | Well, I have to say that in the past 5 days, this puppy is spoiled rotten. He loves to cuddle, and has quickly become part of the family.
I did boil up some rice this morning and mixed it with his food. So far, he has not had another bout of diarrhea, but I think we are still in the early phases.
We are doing pretty well actually on the potty training. I do get up with him every night, at 3hr intervals and take him outside. He quickly does his business and we go back inside. We are crate training, and he only whines for a couple of minutes when I first put him in. Then he quickly falls asleep and don't hear another peep from him. Even when I wake him to go out, he goes right back in the crate without problem.
Thanks for the advice. | | | |

The puppy food I give my pup already has rice in it, should I add some or is that too much?

Alert | Crate training worked for us..
Now if we could just get the Cat to stop chewing up every dang cord in the house.. I am afraid it might fry it's self and catch the house on fire!
| | Just doing it one day at a time. Change is good and it should be looked upon as an improvment! not a problem. ______________________________________ *************************************** San Diego Super Chargers! GO!!! Joined old forum March 2006 Post count: 3068 + these | |

Like "lamb & rice" kibble? Yes, add some cooked rice.
If you're feeding canned or wet puppy food, stop & switch to dry - much healthier for the pup.
