I am going to be transferring my 20 gallon fish tank to a 50 gallon.

Anyone know the best way to do it? The new fish tank needs to go in the same spot as the old one. Should I transfer all the fish to a bucket? And should I use some of the water from the old tank in the new tank?

Thanks for your help.

1. Fill bucket with all of the fish water it can hold.

2. Put fish in the bucket.

3. Save as much fish water as you can in pots, pans or other buckets

4. Move the gravel into Plastic bags.... Feel free to rinse the gravel out..(helps to get the next to new tank feeling.

5. set up the new tank after you mover the old tank.

6. pour water that doesn't contain fish into new tank.

7. Put Fish in the tank and then pour the remaining water into the tank out of fish holding bucket.

8. Pour a bucket of new water in after you treat it with Prime or some other water treatment solution.

9. Continue filling until you have reached the correct lever for the tank.

Just doing it one day at a time. Change is good and it should be looked upon as an improvment! not a problem.

Ok... few things to remember when doing this.

1. You need 30 more pounds of gravel to cover the tank bottom. 50 gal tank needs 50 pounds of gravel.

2. You will need to add some type of Bio-additive with bacteria in it. You will not have enough in the tank water to make up the 30 gallons of additional new water.

3. You might have to upgrade your filtration system. Try a canister filter rated for 50 gallons or more. A 75 gallon canister filter will clean that 50 gal tank nicely. If you are using a under gravel filter, with uplift tubes and power heads, than the ones you have now with the canister filter should be good enough. If you aren't going with a canister filter, than you need to upgrade the power heads for better flow for the larger tank.

Just doing it one day at a time. Change is good and it should be looked upon as an improvment! not a problem.

whoa ! 50 lbs of gravel ? I think it depends on the fish and filter system.
I have a 20 gallon tank with a 3yr old 6 inch goldfish won at the az fair and we went against the rule and put a Pleco in with it to keep the algae and poo down . i have had all kinds of filter systems right now i use a bag filter type for a 50 gallon tank with a ammonia and carbon mix inside and larger pebbles on the bottom of the tank in a single layer of . this works to keep the decaying "stuff" from sitting there like in an under ground filter and helps it circulate. keeping the nitrate levels safe .
Just a thought .

i don't think 50 pounds of gravel is out of line, my 30 gallon fresh water has 30-40 pounds in it.

my 30 gallon salt water has about 40-50 pounds of sand and 35 pounds of live rock.
my 10 gallon salt water has 20 pounds of sand and 20 pounds of live rock.

tanks get heavy in a hurry. making sure you have the proper amount of substrate will help keep the good bacteria levels in check, which will process the detritus, making water changes less frequent.
