We have a new puppy and can't get rid of that "puppy" or dog smell on her. We've used 3 different shampoos and they don't work. Any ideas on what works to get rid of this smell for more than an hour or two?

They are who we thought they were!

Why would you want to get rid of the new puppy smell?? I wish there was a shampoo that would bring that smell back.

You obviously don't know what I'm talking about. This is not a smell that you would want brought back. This is the common dog odor/smell that they get, but it seems to be a lot worse with this dog. Does anyone have any solutions out there that can help with this?

A medicated tar shampoo may help with bad smells. Not sure what the smell is but maybe tomato juice.......it neutralizes skunk sprays.

Has the pup had enough shots that you can take it to a groomer? They could probably solve it for you.

try not feeding it crap puppy food. That typically is a BIG cause of smelly puppies.

What is the breed? We have a min pin that has always smelled like a hound to me. She just stinks and I have tried lots of stuff. We have a pretty good oatmeal shampoo now that masks it, but when she gets a little wet it is worse because then it is hound and oatmeal!

Yum...puppy smell!

Good suggestions - a good quality food will help & depending on the breed, this smell could be here to stay. Have you checked the ears? My beagle gets stinky ears from time to time & we have to keep them clean or she smells like "dog" and makes everything she lays on smell too.

Thanks for the suggestions! She is a beagle puppy and is 12 weeks old. Her shots are up to date. What type of food other than regular puppy food would help? The smell is all over, not just coming from the ears. It makes your shirt stink after holding her. Hopefully something can help neutralize it?

Next time you bathe your puppy put some bakingsoda in his bath water, it is all natural, will not harm him in any way and will help neutralize the odor

Wellness pet food is VERY high quality. You can get it at Tempe Feed and Tack. Any other of the brands that they carry there are also VERY high quality. They don't sell anything that isn't top quality.

A little closer and with more convenient hours, but higher priced, is the pet supply store on Ray Road across the street from Target - Bone Appetite. They also carry Wellness and other top quality dog foods.

The people who run both stores are VERY helpful and will be able to help you pick a top quality food for your puppy.

Yes, Wellness is high quality. We feed Nutro Max here at our house.
Beagles are also prone to impacted anal glands and that is VERY stinky. A groomer or a vet tech should be able to take care of that for you if that is indeed the issue.

Tigg - you may want to ask Chitwoods if they'd order it for you. I have LOTS of customers here in Maricopa who feed Wellness & it may be worth their while to start ordering it. They ordered Enova for one of my customers before.

I tried asking them a while back and they checked with their distributor and can't get it <img src='http://www.85239.com/desktopmodules/ntforums/images/emoticons/sad.gif' height='20' width='20' border='0' title='Sad' align='absmiddle'> .

Bone Appetite said that there is only one distributor that they know of that carries Wellness in the (much) greater Phoenix area. I'm pretty sure that there are at least two though because Tempe Feed & Tack gets it from their distrubutor which primarily carries horse supplies, but also carries Wellness and other top quality dog & cat foods.

I would LOVE to be able to get it locally, but Chitwoods & the one south of Harrah's (can't remember the name) can't get it. It would be SO much more convenient if they could!

Too bad everyone in Maricopa who feeds Wellness can't get together and get it directly from a distrubutor and have it shipped directly here <img src='http://www.85239.com/desktopmodules/ntforums/images/emoticons/ermm.gif' height='20' width='20' border='0' title='Errmmm...' align='absmiddle'>

It may be worth a trip to the vet. Odor can sometimes be indicative of a skin or systemic infection. Chitwood sells CA Natural, Solid Gold and Innova which are excellent brands of food. If you google quality pet food you will get extensive info to research. Good luck with the new pup.
