Alert | I'm looking for one if you have one laying around not in use. I'd like to pay cheap or if you want to give it away even better.
One of my son's gerbils died last night due to internal injuries caused by a dog. He was a wonderful and fun interactive pet. We want to get two more this weekend but they can't live with the other one. To integrate gerbils it takes time.
If you have one please contact me via PM or email at 06ponywoman@dryheatnews.com. Thanks. | | "Happiness is a journey...not a destination."

I have read and understood the posting on this thread and have nothing to add.

I don't think any gerbils should be living in the same house with that dog. Did he not just kill the poor guy?
One is hardly a meal for a dog....by all means, go out and get two more.
I had hamsters growing up and they all lived in one cage together.

Alert | | Well, what happened was that he mistakenly didn't have his door shut tight when he had them in a box on the floor while cleaning their cage. MY dog loved them and never harmed or bothered them. This is my roommate's dog. I think that my son has learned that he needs to be more careful. How rude for you to post in my thread with such inconsiderate remarks. My son just lost his pet, which was his favorite of the two. He was the dominant nurturing one. Also, my son has shown incredible responsibility with taking care of them. We haven't lived in this house that long and he's not used to worrying about the dog. | | "Happiness is a journey...not a destination."

Alert | | Oh, and gerbils do not do very well with each other if they have not always lived together. These guys were brothers and lived together. They need to be slowly introduced and they still may not get along. | | "Happiness is a journey...not a destination."

Alert | 06woman....maybe you need to re-read your first post. Without knowing the whole story...you leave a lot to the imagination. Even if I had a cage, would I want it to house a gerbil in a house that a dog just killed one last night? C'mon.....what was someone supposed to think with a post such as your first one?
You could just have originally just asked for a cage without going into the details.
I had MANY hamsters growing up which my dog loved as well and was very good to them. I also had nine of them in one cage/aquarium together at a time.
I am sorry your son lost his pet because that is always hard on children and I am sure it was a horrific night. However, if it happened once with that dog....it will most likely happen again. No matter how careful he is. If the dog wants that gerbil....he will get it.
What is the difference between a gerbil and a hamster? Is the word hamster "old school?" | | | |

Alert | Without going into my personal feelings of responsibility and opinions on the importance of the welfare of gerbils in a multi- animal household....I would like to state at least the simple fact that YES GERBILS are different than HAMSTERS!!! COMPLETELY! They are a different species altogether. Additionally, they have a VERY DIFFERENT social structure and while gerbils are social creatures, they ABSOLUTELY MUST be introduced slowly if they are not from the same litter or put together at an extremely young age. In fact, they suggest that when introducing non-related gerbils, you must use a clear partition for weeks while introducing them, much like I'm sure that the person who originally asked for the aquarium intended to do, as they would harm each other out of territorial instinct if just thrown in "9 to a cage". Please please please do your research before attacking someone who HAS done research on what is necessary for a particular breed. My two gerbils thrive on each other's company, whereas hamsters are primarily solitary, but don't pose a threat to each other necessarily when housed together.

P.S. Yes, that is Reina my boxer with Cinammon & Sugar the gerbils. When they are out, the kitties are sent upstairs, and they are safely in their excercise balls at ALL times outside of their terrarium. Those are her babies, and she will sit afar and just stare and watch in amazement as they go about their "construction" in their habitat.

Alert | Six, I have had luck finding those things in thrift stores. People get rid of acquariums that leak but they still make good pet cages. You probably don't want to spend the day scavaging thrft stores, so check PetSmart. They have one that's pretty good size for about ten bucks. I was surprised to see it that cheap. You would still need someting to use for a top.
Good luck and sorry to hear about the gerbil. | | Stupid should hurt!

Alert | kmcarey......How kind of you to make your very first post about gerbils. Thank you for clearing up the gerbil/hamster question I had.
I wasn't attacking her about the gerbil. I just didn't think it was a good idea to bring two more gerbils into a house where one had just been killed by a dog living there. It isn't fair to any furry little creature as this is common sense and one doesn't need to do any research to figure that out.

Alert | Normally the gerbil would not be in an open box on the floor where the dog could get it. Yes, this dog had no idea what it was and wanted to find out. My dog, on the other hand, treats them like his babies just like kmcarey's dog. My son loves his gerbils and takes good care of them. The dog can not get to the gerbils when they are in their home. We will have an alternative to the box for the next time he needs to clean the cage so that he or they are safe.
Thanks DD. I might check Goodwill on Saturday anyway since it's half off day. I can check a few within a few mile radius and if not, then I can just get the one at Petsmart. It's probably the same one I have I don't know. The one we have has a lid that locks in place. | | "Happiness is a journey...not a destination."
