I have found someone who boards dogs on her ranch just east of Maricopa. I am going to do a site visit on Thursday. The rate seems great and I hope it works out. They quoted me at $60 for Fri - Mon. I only have 1 dog, but don't want him alone while we are gone and she has a dog of similar age/size for him to play with. I found her advertising on Craigslist.

Make sure to check bonding, insurance & that they have a kennel license. There was a Hidden Valley "kennel" shut down about 2 years ago while it had boarding dogs in it and all of those dogs were taken to the county shelter. It's illegal to have more than 4 dogs in a single home at one time unless a kennel permit is had.

As far as Petsmart goes...well I'm not one to talk badly, but let me say these facts. My best friend, who I was best man in his wedding and he in mine is a director for Petsmart, his wife also works for PetsMart prior as a trainer and now as a groomer...neither had good things to say. (More of the problems stem from their low pay overnight staff which consist mainly of teens who have no dog background, and for get to give proper meds and such since they are too busy on their phones. I also personally know (as in go to their houses for dinner) several vets in the valley. I have heard from more than one of them they have seen the same individuals continually bringing in animas with emergency problems late in the night and claiming them as their pets...just to scan the dogs and find ou they belong to someone else. They mess up and rush them to the emergency vet on Warner (right down the road from the Tukee/Tempe Petsmart) to fix and cover up their mistakes.
I'm sure there are TONS of people who have had no issue or no known issue with boarding their dogs at PetsMart..but since we are talking about our beloved pets, and not something service related like a carwash...It would only take a few people (who happen to be knowledgable in their related fields and have a good community reputation relative to dogs) to be enough to make me not want to take the risk when it comes to my pet. Some things I will gamble on, my pets health is not.
