I'd recommend Star Pups (Julie Rae) - 520-525-9399
or Dawgie Dude Ranch (Grace) - in Hidden Valley - just south of Harrah's - 520-424-9219

I'd recommend visiting before you book. It will give you a good feel for the environment your pooches will be in while you are away. Both are in-home boarding facilities - not your typical kennel. I think you'll be pleasantly suprised.

Or consider using a Pet Sitter to come into your home. It's less stressful for the dogs to be in their own space while their owners are away.

Definately give Julie Rae (Star Pups) a call. She has been taking care of our dogs for a year now. They love it over there.

As my screen name says...we have two big 'co-dependent' dogs and have used Pete and Mac's in Gilbert. They were able to stay in a large pen together, play time together, etc...

One of our dogs is not 'user-friendly' and recently had surgery, so I was a little concerned. However, they provided a daily report regarding his behavior/antics and have a vet on site.

I know it's far away, and probably a little more expensive than most, but this place is first rate. I was impressed with both the facility and staff and would not hesitate to travel out of my way to use them again.

Location is on Elliot and Gilbert Rd. http://www.petemac.com/

Before I get jumped on....No, I don't work there.

It's kinda far from here, but we take our dogs to Bark Ave Pet Resort in Mesa. You can choose the size of the room you would like, they keep the animals inside. Each room has a TV in it and they play pet themed movies all day. You can add on extra's like a peanut butter kong toy, or a ice cream cone. They also take the dogs out to play.

It's a bit of a drive, but we have used them 3 times and never had a problem.

You can also use Kimberly and have her watch your pets in your home - where the environment is what they're used to.

We have used the pet smart pet hotel in Tempe and really really liked it. We put the dogs in a suite together. They have a TV on in there and everything. We will be boarding there again in September for 10 days. They also have a doggie day care program so along with the boarding we pay a little extra and let the dogs play all day with a large group of dogs. It makes us feel better that there not cooped up all day.

If boarding is the option you've choosen, I recommend using someone local as opposed to PetSmart. I've toured the facility & have also heard a number of horror stories from folks who have boarded their pets there in the past. One of my "regulars" used them a month or so ago when I was unavail. and her dog has kennel cough now. He has not interact w/ other dogs at parks or in the community, so there was no other place for him to contract it other than there.

When you choose a facility to board at, take a tour. Ask to see their business license & kennel license. Make sure they require bordatella and other annual vacc's as well of ALL pets that walk through the door. Many places tell you they do and often do ask new clients for proof but sometimes lack follow-through when returning customers book. I and two other local Professional Pet Sitters just toured a new boarding facility right her in Maricopa and we all walked out cringing. No proof of licensing could be shown and the kennels were actually made out of WOOD! Not only unsanitary, but unsafe. YUCK. I checked w/ the County as well at the City and no business license or kennel license was held by this facility despite the owner telling me they did indeed have both.

sarahc - glad you had a good experience at PetSmart. I don't mean to rain on your parade, just giving a heads up about the risks.

I think you run those same risks no matter where you place your dogs.

It’s a personal choice. We toured the place and it was by far the nicest, cleanest and most cost effective solution for boarding our dogs. We had a really great experience with them and are looking forward to using them again.

Others may feel different.

I have met a few people with horror stories abt their pets being kept in the Petsmart Pet Hotel on Elliot. I would definately look into Home is Where the Hound is, or contact Julie Rae. I trust both of those gals with my dogs.

PSW,

That is "Max" in my avatar. He was the puppy surprise, I called you and Julie Rae frantically about. He is quite the character.

Jennse29, just curious to know what place you ended up going with. I'm also looking to board my 2 guys together for a week. I'm not sure if the number for Star Pups is correct as I'm having trouble getting through.

Thanks!
Gilbert

We used Bark Avenue in Mesa too. Bailey really seemed to like it. She learned how to swim on her daily swim lesson, they have a large backyard area with real grass and a fence for running and fetching. As mentioned above they have TVs in the kennel area that play pet movies. Bailey liked it when she was there. I always called 2x per day to check on her.

Yea - I'm overprotective <img src='http://www.85239.com/desktopmodules/ntforums/images/emoticons/whistling.gif' height='20' width='20' title='Whistling' align='absmiddle'>

The best present ever! A day at the Phoenix Zoo as a Zookeeper. Feeding the giraffs was one of the most exciting parts of the day.

Thanks Kimberly. It turns out you had listed the number for Star Pups incorrectly in your original posting. <img src='http://www.85239.com/desktopmodules/ntforums/images/emoticons/smile.gif' height='20' width='20' border='0' title='Smile' align='absmiddle'>

I have found someone who boards dogs on her ranch just east of Maricopa. I am going to do a site visit on Thursday. The rate seems great and I hope it works out. They quoted me at $60 for Fri - Mon. I only have 1 dog, but don't want him alone while we are gone and she has a dog of similar age/size for him to play with. I found her advertising on Craigslist.
