Alert | I have always started as soon as the nails were long enough, even if it's just taking a tiny bit off of each nail. The sooner you start and get the puppy use to nail trims the easy it will be for both of you in the long run.

Alert | | Im not sure, I brought my puppy in once as soon as it had nails were long enough and the lady terrified my dog! She was once one to approach strangers all friendly then right after her nail clipping she didnt trust anyone. But the lady did a real hack job and told me it was free. I wanted to Fire her myself. | | Bye Bye Maricopa!

Alert | Poor pooch!
Java is absolutely right. Begin to touch a puppies paws & ears as soon as he's born so that he's used to grooming as he gets older. We didn't do that w/ our beagle & she's as strong as an ox trying to get away from the clippers. Our Pekingese couldn't care less if we hacked off all her toes she's so used to grooming.
Trim off the little needly puppy nails as soon as they start to draw blood!

Alert | wife trims our dogs nails...
That is all!!!
| | Just doing it one day at a time. Change is good and it should be looked upon as an improvment! not a problem. ______________________________________ *************************************** San Diego Super Chargers! GO!!! Joined old forum March 2006 Post count: 3068 + these | |

Alert | I've tried to cut my dogs nails since we got them as small pups. The boy doesn't care at all....the girl is scared of the nail clippers. As soon as she sees me with them she runs.

Alert | | pkat, just cut a little bit off the ends to blunt them so they don't hurt you so much and do it OFTEN. i lost my old doggy nail clippers and bought anew pair this week, i can't remember the brand, but i'll check when i get back home and let you know if you're interested. they have both a nail file and a bottle of styptic powder that stores right in the handle, so they're right there when you're clipping. they were $17.99, but they are good and sturdy and having everything right there in one place is worth it to me.

Alert | | I was going to suggest just filing them flat till it gets big enough to have someone do them. I'm a big chicken when it comes to clipping them, especially the black ones. I have Marie's do mine.

Alert | I wouldn't even think about cutting nails myself! It's not worth the hastle! I just have the groomer do it when Kuma gets a bath. I use Michelle's Professional Pet Grooming. Kuma thinks she's great and she does a great job.
I don't cut my cat's nails either - they just have sharp nails that they make sharper scratching the cat trees.
The only pet I've had who's nails I cut myself was when I had a rabbit. That bunny would just let me flip him upside down on my lap and let me clip away till all the nails on all 4 paws were nicely clipped. I'm sure it helped that I started clipping them when he was 6-8 weeks old though. He was such a sweet and mellow bunny! (And he was all white, so the quicks were REALLY easy to see.)
I wouldn't trust myself to clip nails on animals as wiggley as my cats or Kuma :o

Alert | | We cut Zeus's nails and we have since he was a pup. We did what PSW suggested and started touching his feet and ears all the time so he was used to it. He will sleep on my husbands lap and when his is good and snoring I start to clip. He never wakes up! I think we got the nail clippers at pet smart for $10.00.

Alert | | I've been playing with their feet for a while now, and it's paid off. Even my older girls who only tolerated it before, wait for me to finish the puppy's nails so I can do theirs. As far as the all black nails, like suggested I have been just barely nipping the tips, and all is well. Thanks. | | ..... If you can dream it, I can build it.
