I have a 1 1/2 year old female shepard mix who is shy and nervouse.  This dog has had training and HAS COME SO FAR!  My concern is she is still somewhat nervouse around small children when they run up to her without me around and strangers. When I am with her she takes cookies from others and let's them pet her.  I have had her in training classes and she does well. I would just like her to be evaluated for some other ideas.  I have spoken to my vet and the vet says I am doing all the right things, and by seeing her not to worry to much. I would feel better to get a third opinion besides my vet and trainer at Petsmart. Does anyone have any names of trainers or behaviorist in the area they could refer?

I would be interested in knowing too.  I have two new puppies that are in need of obedience training.

You can ask Kim at http://www.petsocialworker.org/. There are a few people out here who do this if I recall.

I am starting training with Troy Ballard of Paws for Reflection. She is local and has great recommendations. I am hoping she will be able to help me with my nervous/shy 7 month old puppy. Her website says she can provide specific help with this behavior.

I would also recommend reading Ceasar Milan's books and watching his show. Your reaction to situations that normally would make your dog nervous is very important to how your dog reacts. Calm and assertive leadership is a big key in helping your dog overcome anxiety and fear.

I've used Crystal of Allways Pawsitive and simply loved her and what she accomplished with my extremely shy Westy mix (who had been abused by children and adults).  The results were incredible.   (Background --- When the rescue people came to the pound to adopt dogs, they were told by the Pound that Brenna was not going to be a good adoptee - she was just too shy and too traumitized.  They were going to euthanize her the next day.  Thank God the people didn't listen and did choose her for adoption.)  Finding Fido (I found about about Brenna through them) - gave me Crystal's info.)

She was so shy, however, that for people to even walk by her --- was very frightening.  Now she will come up to people.  She does get nervous when a group of people - or children - come up and they need to move slow.  Generally - after just a few minutes - with most men and women, and some children, she will even give kisses and she follows them around.   The transformation has been nothing short of a mini miracle.

Just want people to know there is not a commission or financial incentive for me ...  just pass the info on...

I CAN'T SAY ENOUGH ABOUT CRYSTAL AND ALLWAYS PAWSITIVE.   She travels to most areas in the Valley.

I forgot to add another tremendous resource - right here in Maricopa - Paws for Reflection.  Troy Ballard.  I've heard many great compliments on Troy's training methods and feel confident in referring Troy, as well.

I just want to encourage you with your dog. I have a shepherd/dobie mix who was very frightened for quite some time after we adopted her. She came from a shelter where, I believe, she had been treated well, but her life before that was a mystery. Skinny and timid, she refused to bark, to put her face close for a kiss, and always seemed to look guilty. My other dog pushed her around. She was so stinking SAD.

Three years later, she's become the alpha. She's put on serious weight, is built like a tall tank, and seems to have a realization of her strength. Two adults couldn't get her to lift her leg to trim her nails, that's how strong she is. She barks her head off when the other dog (another shep mix) plays a little rough with us and will actually tune her up when she's too punky. She FINALLY gives kisses.

She's a completely different girl and I am so glad that she is able to enjoy her life. I hope that gives you a bit of hope.

You might want to try the Pet Counselor in Chandler.  She's amazing!  Her name is Kay Cox and I've heard her on the radio several times.  I guess she's been doing this for almost 45 years.
