Everyone the toads are out becasue of the weather. If your pet comes in from out side shaking, drooling and the gum color is bright red it may be from a toad. Just place your dog in the bathtub or outside with a house an sray out the mouth. Make sure to keep the head down so the water comes out, not down. You should see your dog improve. If this is not done they do get worse and they may start sezuring. Once they are ok find the toad and relocate it.

The are Colo River Toads

a quicker solution is to apply baking soda to the mouth...lots of it

the poison is acid based and the soda neutralizes it immediately. faster than water

What me worry?

Yuck! Are the deadly??

For most dogs?  No.  It makes them stoned.  The toxin is similar to LSD.  Some dogs like it!

Here is a good link for information:

http://www.erowid.org/archive/sonoran_desert_toad/poisoning.htm

The safest thing to do is keep your dogs, cats and small children away from toads.  If you find a toad in your yard - relocate it.  If you suspect toad poisoning, wash your dogs mouth out with water for several minutes.  If your pet seems spacey and stoned - it will probably be OK without further treatment.  If your dog is in obvious pain, fever and rapid heartrate - get it to the vet ASAP.  Your dog is in danger of dying from what amounts to a drug overdose.

The Maricopa vets are weekdays only.  Nights and weekends - you'll need to go to First Regional Animal Hospital 480-732-0018.  They're on Warner, between the 101 and Alma School Rd.  Keep the number on speed dial!

My Jack Russell mouthed a toad last summer.  Of course she had a bad reaction.  INSTANTLY her heart was beating 200+, her fever was off the thermometer scale and she was seizing.  DH drove 100MPH while I held her.  I had brought a big kettle of water in the car, plus bathtowels.  I had her wrapped in the wet towels, the AC blowing on her on high and kept rinsing her mouth the whole way.  Several times en route I thought she'd died as a seizure hit.  The vets at First Regional were great - grabbing her from my arms the minute we got there and rushing her into the ICU for treatment.

We're very careful to look in the yard and pool to make sure there aren't any lurking.  We never paid any attention to them because they didn't bother the other dogs.  My malinois LIKES mouthing the toads - she gets glassy eyed and mellow.

My JRT is more the rare case than the norm.  But why take a chance.  Just fling the toads over the fence!

Are they ever small? We have found a few little frogs (about 2-3 inches in size) in our back yard. Does anyone know the symptoms that a cat would show if exposed to the toads?
I ask because my cat is not right. He keeps licking his body and has even left places on my bed very damp from it. He is acting normal otherwise (not goofy)

I know this is no laughing matter- especially because I have my own dog that roams our backyard....but calling a dog "stoned" and that they like to "mouth toads" CRACKS ME UP!!! lolololol! Silly doggies...

On a serious note- thanks for the info, I will keep my eye out- I knew they were poisonous but didn't know what effect they had on animals.

Thank you, Thank you mommystacey for starting this thread-

Last night both our dogs got into playing with a toad- We had no idea until one of our dogs came in and was foaming from the mouth and convulsing, shortly after the other came in and she was foaming from the mouth- Ironically, I read this thread and my husband who was freaking out wanted to drive to the 24 hour Vet right away. I told him to take them in the shower and rinse their mouths out while I called to see what vet place was open. I felt so bad because he just kept looking at us to him- It was very scary and emotional and am so happy they are doing great!

I cant even Thank you enough! After seeing their conditions last night I really thought the worse, BUT they are doing fine and hopefully will never go near another toad again.....

Interesting.  Did your vet say why baking soda not recom.?

Our Dobbie was frothing and uncomfortable and the baking soda worked instantly.

I went outside last night and what was on my patio, but a BIG FAT toad! It was huge! My cat ran outside and decided to give it a few smacks w/ her paw before I could get her back in. I went out today and did not see it. I hope it moved on because I also have a 5 pound dog and now I'm worried when I let him out.

lazydoubleA--we had three toads in our driveway the other night...and can typically count on at least one by our front door each night...especially if there is a storm.I freaked out because I thought we had rat poop in our driveway...turns out it's toad poop. I didn't even think about toads being the cause of our cats all being weird...They have all been licking and scratching more than usual and one has had a lot of fur come out....we thought they had bugs so we put flea/tick stuff on them and assumed that was the cause of the licking/itching....maybe it's the toads??? One of our cats has always been drooly...but none of them have been foaming at the mouth yet.

Oh, and I think that the vet over by Basha's is open on Saturdays and I know the Maricopa Animal Hospital off of the 347 (the one in the trailer) is open on Saturdays.

I don't recommend going to the vet by Basha's though...we took our cat there and they did blood work and told us everything was fine, then we took her back two months later because she was getting worse and the vet said she had cancer and wouldn't make it through the weekend (this was on a Tuesday) so we should put her down. I made an appt to put her down that Friday. My husband refused to believe that she couldn't be helped so he looked up her symptoms on-line and she had a textbook case of renal failure which an ER vet confirmed. We took her to Maricopa Animal Hospital and they gave her IV fluids for a day and a half and then taught us how to do subcutaneous fluids at home and a year later she's still with us! I cannot believe that we almost lost our cat because of a misdiagnosis of something very obvious, not to mention the hundreds of dollars we spent to be given a wrong answer. She plays, chases bugs, and acts like a normal kitty. We didn't want to go to the "trailer vet" because we didn't think they would be any good...Wrong! They treat our cats and us like we're family and they cost half as much as the other place!
