04/24/2008 6:20 PM Alert

I have a 2.5yr old male german sheppard that is constantly scratching/biting at himself.  I cant see any fleas anywhere on him.  I have another dog that does scratch or bite himself.  Any ideas on what could cause it?  Or how to control it?  I ask this for his front legs have "hot spots" on them and the scratching is driving me nuts at night.

Thanks

Kaire

You may want to take a trip to the vet. Your dog may a mange. There are two kinds. One is easier to cure than the other, but a simple skin scraping will tell exactly what it is.

I highly doubt your dog has mange. He would most likely have hair loss and UNCONTROLABLE itching.
More then likely he has simple allergies. I would certainly recommend going to the vet, but until then you should give him Benadryl and see if that helps. (will I dont know what the exact dosing would be for him, i would recommend that you not give him more then one at a time without a Vets recommendation)
Good luck

I love you Chubbison !!

My Shelty has similar problems. I switched her from beef and wheat food to venison and rice. This, plus an oatmeal type shampoo every few weeks, and adding a little tuna to her food really helped.

I also have a german shephard who suffered from relentless itching. We had him tested for allergies via blood work and the results were positive for both environmental and food allergies.
His food intact is restricted to lamb and rice and he is on allergy shots.. I strongly recommend
you have allergy testing.

Did your dog have this issue before you moved to Maricopa? or have you always lived there??
