Alert | While we're on the subject of lists, here's what I wouldn't go without with a new baby in the house:
1. A good sling
2. A co-sleeper, bassinet, or Amby bed for the early months, then a convertible crib for later on.
3. A nice comfy chair for sitting and rocking
4. Cloth diapers to use as burp rags (They're so much better than the thin pieces of cloth they sell as burp rags.)
5. Nursing pads (I've found reusable wool pads to be a LOT better than the disposable kind.)
6. Lots of cute baby clothes
7. The Lands End Do-It-All diaper bag. (It's simply the best I've found, and very affordable.)
8. An Ergo baby carrier (I still use mine nearly every day with my 16-month-old. You need the extra infant insert to use it with newborns, though.)
9. A good, solid car seat that's properly installed (There are places that will check for you.)
10. Baby blankets of varying weight.
11. A baby swing
12. A good breast pump is always good to have if you breastfeed and plan to be away from your baby for any length of time. La Leche League should be able to help you pick one out that will meet your needs.
I'm probably forgetting some things, but those things are definitely essentials for me.
On a side note... Personally, I think pacifiers are more trouble than they're worth. They're nice for some babies, but mostly I think too much time is spent trying to keep the blasted thing in the baby's mouth... and then later it can be hard to wean them off.

Alert | | I love pacifiers. Consider that babies are born with only one natural ability....the ability to suck. It is proven to sooth them and how can that be bad. My first born wouldn't take one at all and we ended up sticking a finger in his mouth to calm him down in the car or whatever....that sucked! Literally and figuratively!!! My second takes one and we only give it to him when he is upset or having trouble falling asleep. He doesn't use it just because he is awake. Ya, there is the whole thing about losing them but....alas, comes with the territory. Weening can be hard depending on the kid but really it is up to the parents to make it a non-issue as the kid gets older.

Alert | I never liked pacifiers. I agree with pandak about the one ability on their own, but I found it so much easier for them to suck their thumbs. Sorry, I butted in! I have two girls 3 1/2 and 16 months. I tried the paci at first with my oldest, but I had to keep on putting it in her mouth or cleaning it off...constant work. I stopped pretty quick and let her suck her thumb...greatest thing I did. I never had to put that in her mouth in the middle of the night. Because of that (at least I thoroughly believe) they were both sleeping completely through the night by about 2-3 weeks. I would wake them for feedings, but thats it. I couldn't handle either one of them being in the room with me...I've always been a REALLY light sleeper and could never sleep. So, I put a monitor on right by my bed and had them in their own room by the 2nd night they were home. The monitor kept me up too, but not as much and at least I wasn't waking them up every time I woke up. Just my opinion..it worked for me. Also, as far as the problem when sleeping...all you can really do is sleep with a bunch of pillows! Prop yourself up as much as you comfortably can! It will help a lot...oh, and keep tums by the bed. As far as baby items I couldn't live without...
onsies sleepers bottle brushes (even if you plan on breast feeding...I used them to help clean the pump) nice size blankets to swaddle the baby bouncer swing musical (i forgot what its called...umm...oh my goodness...on the crib..it dangles...that thing! hehe sorry!!! crap! I hope you know what I mean...I had one that had a remote so I didn't have to go in the room to start it back up) photo album (big one, especially if this is your first baby) night light of some kind
I know I left things out...but those are the ones that I will never forget! Except maybe I won't remember what they are called!!!! I still can't remember! Anyway...I hope this helps!!
