My four month old baby boy won't stop crying. He is not dirty, ate about 2 hours ago and just won't stop the crying. It is driving me nuts. Besides holding him there is nothing that will calm him down. Is it bad to let him cry it out?

Could he be teething?

Is his tummy hurting? You can tell if he's drawing his legs up towards his stomach. He may be colicky. Another suggestion is to swaddle him. Wrap him snuggly in a receiving blanket - simulating a womb-like cuddle. When you hold him - does he stop crying? Is this the first time he's done this or is there a pattern?
NO - it isn't bad to just let him cry if you've confirmed he's not dirty, not hungry and not ill. Is he your first child or do you have others?

My son went through that as well, around the same time, I WAS just trying to comfort him, and it passed. IT COULD BE EARLY teething as well, or earache. HOPEFULLY HE WILL BE A GOOD BOY AGAIN PRETTY SOON!!!!!!!!!

He is only four months, I did not think that babies could teeth that early. This is my fourth child but none of my other children were like this, so it gives me lots to worry about. I am going to try the swaddling for the next couple of days and see what happens. I was also told by a few people that it could be gas and not colic. I about Mylicon drops and also will try those out. Thanks all for your help.

The colic started for us at about 3 or 4 mo (well Ds was really sick before then so it could have been earlier), anyway, it was a pattern of crying. For us it was nightly from 4:30-9 and nothing helped. There was no crying it out, nothing with batteries, holding him and bouncing him subsided it to a low whine, but it really didn't stop for about 2 months.

Don't forget to ask for help. Parents can go crazy staying home constantly with a crying baby. If you need to get out for a while, PM me and I will be happy to come and stay and give you some quiet time. I had a friend in OR who about went postal with her colicy daughter and I would never wish that on anyone. She didn't ever ask for help. She was as miserable as the baby. I could see her just getting crazier and crazier and constantly blaming herself. She wouldn't give herself a break. Finally, she started to blame herself for the baby being miserable. Don't let it get to that point. She wouldn't take help till it was almost too late for her sanity.

I don't think that it is colic, as I have always noticed that with colicky babies they never start crying. I think that it is gas. Last night we had the worst of it. He was hungry but would spit it out and then suck some more, cry like in pain and spit it out again. WE finally got some sleep around 12-1. I tried the mylicon drops and they help a bit. My family says give him less formula and more water and juices. I am going to ask the doctor on his next appt. What do you guys think?

sounds like gas... Put the drops in his formula... give him more apple juice, help by pushing gently to bend his knees towards his stomach and help him do his business... (only a suggestion) to help ease the gas... worked with my son.

with my 1st she would latch on and then gag and pull off so I stopped nursing but she still did it on the bottle. She was also very spitty. I switched to soy and never had any problems after that. With DS I never drank milk or ate dairy when I nursed and then when I stopped he was on soy formula and soy milk at 1. Both are fine on dairy now, but neither could have it early on.

We tried soy formula already and he did not like it very much. He prefers regular formula. Our doctor recommended Similac Advance so kept him on that. I think that I have some Enfamil formula to give away if anyone needs it. I will check the pantry and let you guys know what type it is.

Apple juice is very gassy, if his problem is gas this could make things worse. If he is constipated, then apple juice is a good choice though.

Water and juice are never really recommended for babies because they get that stuff from breastmilk or formula. My son got his first two teeth before his 4 month birthday so....it is possible. Try grip water as it has worked for some of my friends. If he is lifting his legs like he is uncomfortable try the kneee crunches as the other oerson posted, also try rotating them in a clockwise direction (put his knees together and w/gentle pressure knees up to his chest and then gentle pressure around to extend legs, you can massage his abdomen the same direction. Also, try putting him on his tummy on a hot water bottle.

I hope things are better!

I already have a doctor's appt set for next week. Keep in mind hundred's of years ago people did not have to depend on doctor's. I just wanted to see if anyone else experienced this problem.

So people don't trust home remedies or asking advice. They don't feel it has value unless it comes from an 8 year degree and cost you more than $20 to get.

We know you are pursuing all avenues to help your child and that makes you a wonderful mom. I hope your little guy gets some relief soon; and you too.

Well I hope by now baby is better... otherwise I will go to the doctor, if you try too many things at once with a baby may get sicker... I have not had an issue with my boys, so I dont know what to tell you. For sure take a break, let the baby cry and you get calm, dont end up getting all stress... By know I hope things are better.

Patty it could definitly be colic. Gas is a major part of colic. My daughter would cry uncontrolabley for HOURS and she had HORRIIBLE gas pains. Mylicon gas drops helped on occasion. I had to cradle her with her legs in the crease of my arm tummy down on my arm with her head in my hand. That really seemed to help relieve tummy pressure!!
