I believe that is up to you as the parent. Remember, if your child is allergic to eggs DO NOT get the flu shot for them (allergic reaction). Is your child in daycare? Or around other children alot? You might want to get her one if she is around children all day long

I'm against the flu shot. Everyone i've known that has gotten one, had gotten sick a few days after getting the shot. So why bother???

I'm also a parent to two young kids and would NEVER let them get the flu shot.

You can not get the flu from a flu shot. Every year the CDC determines what the strain of flu people will be passing and makes a vaccine against that one particular strain. The strain is dead and can make you sick or grow. Your body attacks this dead flu bug and creates and immunity against it. The reason why some people get mildly sick right after a flu shot is that your body is busy fighting this flu stain that your immunities may let in something else.

The flu can be very very serious for small children and older people. I work in healthcare and I got my flu shot yesterday. I have a sore arm today and some redness... that’s it!

I say the flu shot is a good thing.

No, she's not in daycare. She's either home with me or my wife during the day and only sees other kids if we go to the park or have play dates.

I am not necessarily against the flu shot. I've gotten it before. But everyone should be aware the flu shot DOES still contain Thermisol. You CAN request it w/o if that is something you are concerned about. It is a miniscule amount - it is a mercury-based heavy metal which is linked to autism. I do NOT believe there is enough in one shot to cause anything, but heavy metals are not easily flushed out of the body, so it can become dangerous IF your levels are already high.

My children do not receive the shot.

I know you can't get the flu from the flu shot, but the ONLY year I had my then 1 1/2 year old get the shot, he ended up in the hospital 2 days later. He had been vomiting & had a 104+ temp for a day and it was NOT going away. That experience alone has made me opt out of the flu shot for myself and my children.

My 7 year old has never gotten one and he rarely gets sick.
Since the last experience of the flu shot for my now 3 year old he rarely gets sick now. The worst hes ever been sick was the time he got the flu shot. So like everyone has said its honestly up to the parent.

Every member of our household gets a flu shot every year. The ones that contain Thiermosol are rare, and not as big of a deal as some (not saying you love@hm ) make it out to me. I work in healthcare and we have a kiddo at school, so we are constantly bombarded with germs. My husband works with the general public as well, so it just makes sense to help protect us from what could be awful.
It's normal to get cold virus like symptoms after most any vaccine. That's how your body uses the vaccine to make the antibodies to protect your body.
Hearing that people can die from the flu is enough to make sure that we are vaccinated.

Drummer- how old is your child? if you don't think that she's at in increased risk (daycare, sibs in school, etc) then I would say skip it this year. But if she tends to get sick easy or has an increased risk, then I'd say go for it.

If you can't spot the loser, it might be you

YZ,
She's 18 months old, not in daycare and an only child.
She get's an ocassional runny nose here and there, but over all her immune system is good.

talk with the pediatrician... most dont give the ones containing any mercury to children under 5y/o My daughter goes to TLC Ped's and they don't use the one w/ it in them. She along with us gets the shot every year and thank god have not gotten the flu. My step daughter (11y/o) never gets the flu shot and I think has only caught it once.
You can't get the flku from it. The flu strains in it are not live. They are dead strains to help your body build the immunity to fight it if you're exposed to it.
It is the choice of the parent. I pot for it since she is in preschool and Moms club function and has a older sibling in school that brings home all sorts of icky stuff from school.
Also, realize that exposure can come from the grocery store, Target, pos office... anywhere that people are and their hands and cough and sneezes have been.... ugh hate cold/flu season!
May you all be blessed with good health!

Keep in mind that people generalize upper respiratory viruses as "the flu". If you have truly had the flu, it's horrible. Six out of seven of my family members had Influenza A around Christmas of 2005. I was the only one who didn't get it, but the adults were all the sickest they had ever been and my son (5 yrs old at the time) was hospitalized. We get flu shots every year now. I used to get them every year when I worked in healthcare and never got the flu. Upper respiratory infections and colds, yes, but not the flu.

Yes, it is important to know the difference between the flu and a cold.

alot of people think if they catch a nasty virus it's atomatically the flu. You should educate yourselves on the symptoms of the flu.
