Thanks!

Ok...I'm going to get jumped on for this.....but have to ask.

Why do people feel that it is necessary to have a Dula? If I'm correct - a Dula is kind of like your coach in child birth right? Women have been doing this for years!!!Squating in fields to birth a child and then go on harvesting the fields!

What is the advantage of having someone there to tell you to breath and go to your happy place?I kind of figured that out on my own!!

I've had two children - one with no drugs at all and one with an epideral (got smarter as I aged). 5 hr start to finish labors with both. Am I not getting this as both of my labors were relatively easy?

Doula's are there for physical and emotional support of labor. It is nice to have someone not emotionally attatched there to help you be informed of all your options....an advocate for you.

I am trained to help you get in different positions for childbirth. Most woman have labors that can last a long time esspecially a first time mom (12-72 hours) and it is easy to get frustrated. I help the couple stay focused on having the birth that they want. Having a Doula allows your husband to be involved at the level they are comfortable.

If you have any more questions you can visit DONA.org. That is the Doulas of North America website.

This will be my 3rd baby. My first two labors and deliverys were quite traumatic, and the medical professionals present were, for the most part, cold and unhelpful. My questions and demands for information about the progress, and options were ignored. I labored for 26 hours with my first, and 15 hours with my second. I had epidurals for both (and fully intend to get another one, as I am a pain wuss). My first two experiences were scary and confusing for both my husband and I. We took childbirth prep classes and I felt I walked into the hospital armed with the knowledge I needed, but was denied a voice when it came to what actually happened.

I'm considering a doula so that I have someone who is a medical professional who is for sure, #1 on my side, if the Dr's/Ob's aren't. Things get so hectic in the delivery room, sometimes the dr's and nurses forget about the patient.

I'm just looking for a better experience for my 3rd time.

Ok, I get that. I have been using the same OB over 10 years. OB also delivered my sister's 3 children. I have a very good relationship with him as a patient and felt completely ready for delivery and that my wishes would be followed and they were.Delivered at Scottsdale Healthcare North (92st and Shea) both times and one child was premature and one was in ICU for a week. Both times the hospital staff included me in every decision, kept me well informed and treated me as more of a customer than as a patient. They even let me sleep in a room there at the hospital so that I could be with the baby in ICU all of the time, etc.
Maybe that was the difference.

I did not use a doula, but I did use a midwife. I loved it! I also did a natural childbirth and my midwife was with me every step and supported every desicion. She told my husband and I what to expect with every stage of labor. She helped my husband feel comfortable helping me because she told him about all the bodily fluids that can be involved with labor He had no idea!

Good for you that you were able to do it without any other help!
MY DH said, HE WOULD NEVER LET ME DO IT WITHOUT THE DOULA!!!!! IT was HUGE help even for him to have someone there to help me what to do to ease the pain <img src='http://www.85239.com/desktopmodules/ntforums/images/emoticons/smile.gif' height='20' width='20' border='0' title='Smile' align='absmiddle'> IT WAS AWESOME!!!!!! If it was only me and my DH I would have ended with epidural after 5 hrs or labor for sure <img src='http://www.85239.com/desktopmodules/ntforums/images/emoticons/smile.gif' height='20' width='20' border='0' title='Smile' align='absmiddle'> You had very easy labor and delivery!!! Mine was pretty easy, ( about 10hrs) BUT I did not know how it will be so I was much calmer as well.

Are there any Doulas that need births for certification? I would be willing to apprentice you. You can PM me if you would like.
