 Alert | i've also heard breast milk is great for chapped lips. i understand there are tons of uses like these.
i have a question, i am a week away from my due date and have not had any leakage at all. i have a friend who isn't due til christmas and has already been leaking for a couple of weeks. i know everyone is different, i am just concerned cuz i had gastric bypass surgery 3 years ago, i belong to a post op pregnancy web site and from reading it, it seems a lot more women have trouble BFing after the surgery. i feel VERY strongly about BFing nick and am wondering if there is anything i can start doing now to ensure my milk supply. i know there are certain herbs that are supposed to increase milk production, does taking these ahead of time help? or could it hurt the baby to take them while i'm still pregnant?
i went to 1 LLL meeting last month, but i missed this month cuz it was the morning after my (very late lasting) baby shower, and i slept right through the darned thing! any help or advice i can get is really appreciated. also, you ladies with lots of BFing experience, if you are willing would you PM me your phone number? in case i have questions once i am home with nick. i really want to get all my ducks in a row on this one, like i said, it is a top priority for me. thanks. | | | |

I know there is a tea called Mother's MIlk that is suppose to help your milk supply.
For a question like pumping and starting early I would talk to your OB. I do know that it does cause contractions of your uterus so unless you're ready now I probably wouldn't start it. Again... I would consult your OB though.
I have heard it's good for chapped lips too. Also, sore dry nipples..... | |

Alert | Demonica - never once have i leaked prior to delivery. and has anyone told you that you will leak when any baby cries? yeah, that never happened to me either, didn't even happen when my own babies cried. everyone's response is different.
other than staying incredibly hydrated, well rested (which i know is hard to do with a new baby), and nursing on demand (not by a schedule), will you ensure a good supply. check out kellymom.com for other awesome BF advise. i love that site! Try not to stress about your supply, especially before baby comes. Your body knows what to do.
Hydrated, rested, nurse on demand (especially in first few weeks). Breastfeeding works on supply and demand. the more baby demands, the more supply you make. | |

Alert | | I had a problem with caffeine with my second baby. If I drank caffinated soda or coffee, I would see a decrease in milk supply but when I cut out caffeine, back to normal again. Caffeine is a diuretic (sp?) and I guess it was getting rid of the fluids I needed. | | | |

Alert | yeah, no caffeine...and no decongestants...they dry you out.
My milk would come down when my baby cried...sometimes when another one did if it was really close. My mom was the same way. After awhile "they" got use to her feeding times and would come down "on schedule".
I also agree with feeding on demand and not trying to stick to a set time. Your baby and your body knows their needs.
Try and rest. Take help if it's there and know that this is totally natural and your body knows what it's doing. Instinct will kick in.

Alert | | I never leaked and did not know I had any milk in there until the nurse showed me after he was born. I pumped everynight after he was born to make sure I had a good milk supply and I am going on 1 year of breastfeeding now. I am not always sure that the extra pumping helped but when I tried to sstop pumping I felt like I was drying up. You can at least pump for a little bit to get a good supply going. Make sure that if you are away from him after he is born to still pump like you would be feed ( example- every 3 hours). Good luck and remember that breastfeeding may be hard at first and painfull but it is so worth it!!!! Good luck | | | |

Alert | | I wouldn't pump until the actual milk comes in, after about a week. otherwise you're pumping colostrum and baby needs that in his tummy in those first few days, not packed away in the freezer for later use. just my 2 cents | |

I agree on waiting on pumping.....
also, i you have trouble keep at it. It can be hard forthem to latch on at first and for about the first week you will be REALLY sore but after that it's nothing...until they get their teeth..haha | |

Alert | thanks everyone. i have been having irregular contractions since thursday night, mlast night one woke me up gasping, it was so strong, so i'm thinking this should be happoening soon. interestingly, about 2 hours before my frist contrsction, my breasts started leaking for the very first time. it's only a drop or 2 here and there, but at least now i feel confident that there's actually something in there!
here's the weirdest thing though: thursday night our 5 month old pit bull puppy all of a sudden looked at me, stared me straight in the eye and started acting like cujoi, really loud, mean sounding barking and growling, i was seriously wondering if he was going to attack me, then i tried to remember if DH was mad at me for anything, or if he'd pull the puppy off me. then max launched himself off the floor and onto my lap, glued himelf to my belly and wouldn't move, but was totally calm at this point. within about a minute and a half i had my first contraction. the only thing i can figure is that he sensed soime type of change in me and it freaked him out. both of the dogs have been very clingy since then, staying by my side whenever i'm at home. right now i'm at my mom's in gilbert and her dog is the same, she is totally ignoring my mom and following me around the house. things that make ya go hmmmmmm... | | | |

Alert | OMG! I never knew you could use breast milk for any of this stuff. How interesting! I don't nurse, so it wouldn't do me any good. I do want to point out that I put both my babies on formula and neither one of them got sick a lot. My 7 mo. old has caught a cold or two, but mostly cause we have one in the making and not knowing that kiss him. Hard not to he's so cute. And, I have a friend that was adament abt bf and her son (4 days older than mine) has had pnemonia, bronchitus, is on medicine for acid reflux, has asthma etc.
I think it used to be true that breastmilk was better, but I think they have this formula thing down pretty good. | | | |

Alert | Leefamily and any other ff parents, this is not to offend or attack you...(BTW, my oldest did have some formula)
But breastmilk will always be superior and will never be duplicated, yes they are improving formula all the time and it is a lot better than it ever was.
Leefamily, I'm glad that your baby has stayed healthy and hope that continues throughout the winter! Sometimes bf babies do get sick, but just think about how sick your friend's baby could have been if she didn't have all the good stuff from her mommy's milk. Keep in mind too that it depends what the babies are exposed to; childcare, older siblings, parents that work, playgroups and so on. | | | |
