SO Jaden`s 15 mos appointment the Dr told me to start to self feed himself with spoon! ANY SUGGESTION?

I hate to have him clean up, clean clothes so I need some good advice, like stripping him down before eating....
How long should this take? ( I mean to master the spoon thing for himself!!!) HE LOVES TO BE FED with his food, but also picks up his food with pieces.

Come on you Moms out there who already went throuhg with this, HELP ME OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!

THANKS!!!!!

haha stripping him down works well. Also make sure you don't give him too much food. Could overwhelm him and he will end up playing in it more than anhything.
Have patience and accept that there will be lots of clean ups in your future! good luck!
Enjoy it...get out the camera. Dinner time can give you some really funny pictures!

Old t-shirts from Dad make good aprons for kiddo's. And don't laugh - an old vinyl tablecloth makes cleaning the floor a breeze. Just remove the major chunks (or get a dog) and toss into the washer and you're ready for the next meal.

the thicker the better. anything mushy or soupy will slide right off... maybe mashed potatos... or something like that. Not sure what he is eating. You can work at it slowly... you don't have to give him his whole meal like that. You can do it one thing at a time...
Just don't interfere... let him do his thing even if it's messy. he has to be able to figure out what works himself.... he will prbably end up using his hands for a while but that's a learning experience too!

I was mor nervous about it! I gave him cottage cheese with some mashed fruits in it!!!

BUT I know this is only the first step, he needs more for mastering it <img src='http://www.85239.com/desktopmodules/ntforums/images/emoticons/smile.gif' height='20' width='20' border='0' title='Smile' align='absmiddle'>

They sell spoons for beginner self feeders. the handle is thick and the spoon part is deeper than a regular spoon so he doesn't lose the food from the plate to his mouth. Once he masters that, get some of the Zoo Pals plasticwear. They are $2 a box, and reusable.

My son goes to a daycare. It is pretty large so they divide the kids into rooms based on age. When he was in the infants room, they fed all the babies. Then, they moved him to the 1's room when he was 13 months. So on Friday they were feeding him baby food and pureed food and the next Monday he was handed a bowl of cereal with a spoon. I thought they were nuts! I still fed him at home with a spoon for a while and just let them deal with the mess but before long he wouldn't eat unless he had a 'poon. Now he is 25 months and eats very well with a spoon and fork. They grow and learn so fast!
