Does anyone know the current laws on booster seats, What age do they not need one anymore. My hubby said he found a few sights say at the age 5 they dont need one, I saw one that said 6 and a couple others that said 4... So I really dont know the right age in which they do not need a booster anymore. If you dont know, do you know where I would be able to call to find this out. Thankyou so much

I think its more based on weight. I wanna say 40lbs. I can't remember where I read that though.

It depends more on the size/height of the child AND the seatbelt in the car they are riding in (since the top portion of the belt originates in different areas in different model cars). Children don't need a booster anymore when the seatbelt fits them correctly meaning it doesn't cut across their cheek or neck it should lay accross their shoulder and the lap portion crosses their lap NOT their bellies. I would contact Phoenix police department and ask about car seat safety. I say Phoenix because larger cities usually have a car seat/booster seat safety officer that can answer questions.

The goverment reccomends 4'9" tall before they can be in a regular seat belt.

Check out www.boosterseat.gov Looks like Arizona is 1 of 11 states that don't have a requirement to age 6 or older. From the brochure it shows that most states require boosters to age 6 or 8. Few even require to age 9.

It shouldn't matter if the state only requires boosters to age 5, when it comes to your kids it should be safety first! Don't take your child out of a booster too soon, it isn't worth it! If your cars seatbelt doesn't fit properly it could be a matter of life and death! I know someone who required several surguries after a car accident because the seat belt sliced his abdomen open, imagine a little one who is too short for the seatbelt to be on his/her shoulder and instead goes accross their neck or cheek!

Chief Melvin here in Maricopa is HIGHLY educated on car seat safety and regulations in AZ as well as manufacturer recommendations and national safety recommendations. He spoke to a group last year and was very informative. I am sure others at MPD are as well.

this struck my curiousity because my son is 5 almost 6 but he still rides and will in a booster seat (even though he is like 95% in his height and weight for his age.

Arizona's laws are probably the most lax in the nation.

There is no weight limit - only age (4 AND under must be in a carseat/booster). AND if there aren't enough seat belts in the car for the number of PEOPLE in the car, a BABY can ride w/o carseat. . .

Also, it is legal for ADULTS to ride in the back of a pick-up truck w/o a camper. . I believe if there is a camper, and not enough seat belts, children can also ride w/o being buckled - but this I'm not certan about.

AZ, has for a very long time believed in people governing themselves. It is an idea that parents should be responsible for their children's safety and the gov't stay out of it. Usually laws are not passed until the gov't starts to threaten pulling of funding. . . I'm not making this up - that's what happened with the seat belt law - which is still very lax compared to most states.

The point I'm making is it is better to step up and follow what is safest for your children and not depend on the state to tell you what is safest, because in this state that just isn't going to happen - at least not quite yet. . . Which I'm really glad about - except when it comes to carseat safety - too many people literally don't know, and then the kids are the ones that suffer.

My kids will all ride in boosters until they hit the weight/height recommendation of 80 lbs, 4'9". My son is 45 lbs, and MAYBE 50 inches - he is almost 8. He asks me regularly why he has to use a booster when his friends don't. . . my answer, "Because I'm your mother, and I want to keep you as safe as possible. What your friends' parents decide is up to them."

OMG where did you get this from? Keep a baby out of a car seat? I think not! I saw a video once ( not sure where now) that showed it is good to keep the kids in a booster until the seatbelt sits comfortably across the shoulder and chest, and their legs bend at the knee in a seated position. this is because their legs will buckle in a head on collision or collision where the car is impacted in the front and pushes the front seats backwards and into the childs legs.

I got it from the AZ statutes, which state:

5. A person who transports more than one child under five years of age in a motor vehicle that because of the restricted size of the passenger area does not provide sufficient area for the required number of child passenger restraint devices, if both of the following conditions are met:
(a) At least one child is restrained as required by this section.
(b) The person has secured as many of the other children in child passenger restraint devices pursuant to this section as is reasonable given the restricted size of the passenger area and the number of passengers being transported in the motor vehicle.

the link is:

http://www.inventiveparent.com/lawsreg9.htm#Arizona

I have found it it numerous places by googling "AZ car seat laws".

Keep in mind, there is also no seat belt law requiring children 5 and older to be buckled at all - unless they are riding in the front seat. AZ's seat belt law is ONLY that people riding in the front seat must be buckled. . . anyone 5 and over can ride unbuckled in the back seat.

I have lived in AZ my whole life and have never known anything else. AZ has ALWAYS tried to not limit these types of things. . . it's kind of funny, they don't even show up on the ballot, yet we have passed how many smoking laws. Now, I personally am all for smoking laws, but it still seems a little backwards.

I just found this chart too:

http://www.elitecarseats.com/custserv/custserv.jsp?pageName=car_seat_laws

It shows in chart form ages for all child restraints in all states. Minnesota is the only one that is less restrictive than AZ - according to the chart.
