Alert | Is there anyway to do this?! I have a 2yr old and an 8 month old and it's like clock work. Every morning, 5 am, they're awake. I've tried putting them to bed later, even hours later. We've put the blanket over their windows so it's completely dark all day long. I've tried putting them back down or just letting them stay in their room for awhile.
Is there anyway to get them to sleep later? I don't care if it's just 6:00!! Mommy does not function that early!

Alert | | I wish I had the answer!! My 2 year old has been doing the same thing all summer, sometimes even before 5!! I bought dark curtains to put over the wood blinds, thinking maybe it was just too light, but the curtains don't help a bit. I'm so freakin' tired and another baby is due in 3 weeks, so it's just going to get worse, I'm afraid!

Alert | Lol....This is why I took up drinking coffee. Just take a nap when they nap. Even if for just 20 minutes to recharge your batteries.
Mine our teenagers now and they love to sleep in. I just wish I could make the cats sleep past 4:30 am. They are up and running, chasing each other at that hour. Weekends mean nothing to them....ughhhh

Alert | TC sounds like our house. The kids are older nad sleep in til noon, but the cats wake us up! Uhg!
I wish I had some helpful advice. My kids were really good cuase this mommy needs sleep too. Will your oldest let you snooze while they watch tv? Maybe bring them to bed with you. My kids are 17 months apart and when they were both old enough I just told them to play quietly and if they needed anything wake mommy up. Then at least I could catch a cat nap in the morning and then nap when they did in the afternoon.
Good luck. | | | |

Alert | I read somewhere that putting your kids to bed later will not make them sleep in later..my 2 year old daughter is proof of that! I'll find the source, but they said that actually putting them to bed earlier will allow them to settle down better and sleep better throughout the night and they will be more apt to sleep longer.
I find if I put my 2 year old to bed anytime after 7:45, it takes her at least two hours before she finally settles down to sleep. Now, you would think she would sleep in longer. Nope! She's up in between 5 and 6. But, if I put her down around 7:15 -7:30, she'll sleep until 6:30 - 7:00, which I can handle! <img src='http://www.85239.com/desktopmodules/ntforums/images/emoticons/smile.gif' height='20' width='20' border='0' title='Smile' align='absmiddle'>
I'll find the source that I read that tip from and post it as soon as I get another chance to be online! <img src='http://www.85239.com/desktopmodules/ntforums/images/emoticons/smile.gif' height='20' width='20' border='0' title='Smile' align='absmiddle'>

Alert | Here's the link:
http://www.babycenter.com/expert/toddler/toddlersleep/1293013.html
It touches briefly on how sometimes an EARLIER bedtime is needed for the toddler.
Hope this helps. Tanya | | | |

Alert | | I have also heard that if you put them to bed earlier they will sleep better and longer. I read it in the book called Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child By marc Weissbluth, M.D. It's a great book!

Alert | | My 5 year old wakes up with the sunrise. He has been told that he needs to let mommy and daddy sleep in because we can't get up that early, so he plays quitely in his room until I get up. Then if I need a nap I will put a movie into the DVD player and he will watch the movie and wake me up when it is over. However I also find that coffee really helps too. Speaking of coffee where did I put my coffee, <img src='http://www.85239.com/desktopmodules/ntforums/images/emoticons/shocked.gif' height='20' width='20' border='0' title='Shocked' align='absmiddle'>must have coffee. <img src='http://www.85239.com/desktopmodules/ntforums/images/emoticons/biggrin.gif' height='20' width='20' border='0' title='Big Grin' align='absmiddle'> | | 25MPH in VRED: not just a good idea, it's the law.

Alert | My 2 year old daughter goes down around 7-7:30pm and sleeps in until about 7 am. She does wake up once in a great while at about 4am, my hubby gets up around that time, so she seems to know that. He will just go in give her a drink of water and hug and she goes back down. I have been pretty lucky. I do know that it does not help to put her to bed later, she seems to do better with the earlier bed time.
My son, when he was younger we gave him a couple toys and books in his bed, so when he woke up he could play with them and we could slowly get up. Maybe try that? | | Michele

Alert | Jwelly, I had the same problem!!! My little one woke up between 5 and 5:30 a.m. every day. Here's what I did to get him to sleep later....
First, I stopped nursing in the middle of the night, totally. Replaced with a cup of water, tucked into the side of his toddler bed so he can grab it himself. That was a process. He cried every night for at least a week. I just stood there next to the bed, rubbed his back, comforted him and basically did the "sucks for you" routine.
Then, when he woke up at 5:00, I nursed him right there at the toddler bed. (If you don't nurse, maybe you could have a bottle ready or whatever you normally do first thing in the morning?) I whispered like it was the middle of the night. Then I tucked him back in like it was night time. He started going back to sleep for an hour to two hours. Sometimes he stayed awake (but not too often) and sometimes it was only for 1/2 an hour.
He wakes up around 6:00/6:30 now. It's still early, but worlds away from 5 a.m.
I wonder if it was simply that I started to realize that 5:00 a.m. is still the middle of the night that changed everything? I mean, if he woke up at 2:00 a.m. what would I do? I'd make sure he went back down. I think that's why I remained determined and changed it. | | I loathe people who keep dogs.
