Alert | | My 16 month old absolutely loves dogfood!! We feed our dog IAMS dogfood. Every day, all day my 16 month old will go to her bowl and start eating dogfood like they are raisins! In the beginning( 2 or 3 months ago) I would freak out and pry the food out of her mouth. Now I try to tell her no, no and let her finish! I cannot put the food outside, sicne it's too hot and the food gets icky. Is it just me or does anyone else have this problem?!

Alert | lol. Yes! My daughter is going to be 2 in a month, she just stopped eating dog food! She started as soon as she could crawl. I also tried the prying of the mouth but eventually gave up.
We actually had to start buying the more expensive dog food because we figured if she was going to continue to eat it we atleast want it to be the really good stuff (no animal byproducts, etc.). I would suggest the same, thoroughly examine the ingredients and do some searching on the web to find out what is REALLY in the dog food. You do have to watch out because many of them contain growth hormones.
We asked our doctor and he said its perfectly normal. Children at that age do not have fully developed palettes, therefore something we think is disgusting tasting they may not. Same reason why babies tend to love beer and coffee.
Anyways, perfectly normal. I known many children that eat dog food, including my own little girl. As hard as it is to see my little princess sitting over a dog bowl, it seemed to work best for us to just ignore her or give her a quick stern "no". The more of a big deal we made out of it the more she wanted it. Anyways, hope this helps.

Alert | | An interesting side effect is that babies who are allowed to eat dog food, begin barking at a much earlier age than normal children. :>) | | <=== Galaxies In Collision

Alert | My daughter nibbled on the dog food... but ate entire meals of catfood! Tuna breathe - yuk.
Her all time favorite 'snack' was the grain we fed the cows. She'd go out to the barn and get a cereal bowl full and eat it. Literally from the time she was around 3 or 4 until she was about 12. We tried it once - you never know, it could have been like granola. It wasn't. VERY BLAND.
Don't worry - I think a lot of kids eat pet food As someone else said - get the good pet food.

Alert | LOL.... caught ours heading to the Dog bowl room Saturday...
caught her before she was able to get too it.
We are just going to close the door to the bowl area and feed the dogs on a schedule.

Very very very careful.... Pu up a gate in the feeding area that the dogs can jump but the kids can't get in.
Lots of options...!!! | | Just doing it one day at a time. Alert | | Just make sure you get pictures so that when they bring their boyfriends or girlfriends or even future spouses over you can show them. Possibly frame it so everybody can see it all the time. I guarantee it will get a few good laughs.
