Alert | We recently found out that our 13 mo old is very allergic to all dairy products. And for the next year all egg products are out and 2 years seafood/shellfish. I read labels like crazy, done lots of research but we are stuggling to find food that are ok for her to eat. As a family we are trying to change our eating habits to include things she can eat, but it is sooo hard, since tons of foods include milk or milk products or eggs. Plus we are a HUGE Dairy family, I mean, I grew up on a dairy farm. We are eating lots more fruts/veggies and grains.
I'm sure there are other families out there that are going thru the same thing. Do you have any helpful tips or advise? | | --Cheryl--

Alert | | One of my friends dad is allegric to dairy products also. I know he was able to eat like cake (and stuff with dairy products in it) it just had to be cooked. I do remember one time when we were at her house we had to have Pizza Hut pizza because they didn't put in any dairy products in the dough. Not sure how that all exactly worked out. I just found it very interesting so I thought I would let you know. Maybe you have something to look forward to.

Alert | | Try going to epicurious.com and do their advanced search. They have tons of recipes and you can narrow your search by maybe selecting kid friendly recipes and also select what items your child can't have. You should be able to find something here. I use this website all the time and I have rarely come across recipes that I do not like.

Alert | | My daughter has an allergy to peanuts and you'd be surprised what contains, processed, and manufactured in a facility means to us parents. You have to be very vigil about reading everything ! Even products that are trusted in one part of the country can be made in a different plant and have different labels . Its very frustrating! She does not have the same freedoms we had growing up . B-day parties are a nightmare. people don't get IT. You will need to provide yours with safe snack options and always have whatever is needed to help them combat an allergic reaction . whether or not that is an Epi-pen Jr or benadryl if it's as severe as mine has .

Alert | Thiskiss- Unfortunantly she can't have ANY dairy products. Right now the dr's. are wanting her body to forget about the milk protein and hopefully in a couple years her body will have forgotten about her allergy. Good thing to know about Pizza hut crust tho!! Thanks.
MythreeAAAs!- Thanks for the site I'll check it out.
Nick- I know what you mean about people not understanding. I can't tell you how many crazy looks I get when I ask about ingredients or say "she can't have that, she's very allergic" I feel so bad too, because everyone can have cake or ice cream, but she is stuck with a carrot stick. We have a little 'snack bag' that has stuff that she can eat in it, so if we go places its not so hard. We also have her epi-pen packed, pray we never have to use it, and benadryl. Good to know that I'm not the only one going thru this. Thanks! | | --Cheryl--

Alert | CDPEDRO – I have 4 children with varying degrees of allergies. You can find products from Cherry Brook Kitchen right here at our Frys (on aisle 5). They make cake mix, cookie dough, pancake batter, etc that is dairy free, peanut free, etc. Here's a link to their website: http://cherrybrookkitchen.com/
In the health food section at Frys (over by Tully's coffee and the balloons) they have LOTS of stuff including ICE CREAM made from soy and gluten, dairy and peanut free chocolate chip cookies that are REALLY good. You can also get the canola or corn margarines to use in most recipes.
Whole Foods (I only know of the one in Scottsdale) has cheeses made by Tofutti that you can use for pizza and grill cheese sandwiches. Be careful of the Dream brand of cheeses - they contain casein (milk). They also have yogurt and pudding made with soy.
Here’s another helpful website: http://www.foodallergy.org/recipes.html
Please pm me if you need more information.

Alert | Yes, the Cherry Brook brand of products is really good. My son has an egg allergy, so we buy the chocolate chip cookie mix and the pancake mix. I've made the pancakes with soy milk and it was just as good as regular. I found that he can eat store baked goods, but not home made items with egg. For some reason it doesn't give any reaction when store bought. Try egless mayo in the health food section. Don't be afraid to try the meatless products in the health food section too. Good sources of protien without the dairy but watch because some still have egg product in them. Soy based ice cream is yummy too!

Alert | I am sorry that you are having to deal with that! My sister had horrible food allergies as a kid, in fact, her doc even suggested that my mom re-lactate to provide her with food. Well, that wasn't going to happen. I remember accidentally drinking my sister's powdered mil (I don't know what it was made of) and I nearly lost it! She loved it though and that was what was important. Now she eats everything with no problem.
Good luck! | | | |
