I am a parent of a Freshman student at MHS and wanted to send this little tid bit out to other parents. My child came home from school today talking about a movie that is being shown in his math class. He stated that the teacher is not returning next year and wanted to leave the students with a great impression. I am Christian and I am aware that there are many people of faith in this town and after watching "The Secret" my husband and I are infuriated that this movie is being shown without ever being sent home a permission slip. This movie is being deemed as a positive thinking documentary type, however it is not just that. It is teaching how we are in TOTAL control of our lives - that God is not part of the equation!! It is in it's own way it's own religion. Parents I realize everyone is allowed their own view and if you feel that ,though you are followers of Christ, you are OK with your children viewing this movie I am in no way judging you for that, I am however letting everyone know that while our children are not allowed to pray over their luches at school they are right now in one class being informed that everything is up to them and God is not in control. Since my husband and I received no information on this movie I am assuming no other parents did as well so I thought I would inform you.

Ok, are you serious? I've seen the movie and not once does it say anything about God or no God. It's just a positive thinking, motivational type of video. I applaud the teacher for showing it to the kids and think that if more teachers did, the kids would benefit.

Even if the child disagrees with what he or she sees, it's not a dangerous or evil video like you have made it out to be. What kind of world do we live in where it is unnacceptable by parents for the kids to be shown a motivational film? Do teachers really have to fear that parents will be upset whenever they try to help give the kids some positive thoughts???

UGGH. Upsetting.

I agree.  I think a little positive thought can't hurt anyone.  You make it out to be that the movie said "Don't belive in Christ, and only think positively".  good grief.

OK to stop any relious belief controversy in it's track I take full responsibility that I wasn't clear about my intentions for this post - my post was due to the fact, that yes this movie would be very upsetting to many people of faiths, but the main point was that NO PARENT"S were informed that they were showing this movie - they are required by law to send home permission slips for movies - even something as little as Bambi. We as parents have every right to decide what our children can and can't be shown, taught, or anything else whether it is at school or at home. When a teacher or the school systems themselves take that right away from me that is when I get ticked. I am not saying that motivational movies are bad to show I am just saying - let us parents decide whether or not our children can handle the message. Right now my child is under the impression from this movie that he didn't care enough or concentrate hard enough on the fact that his grandmother and I got cancer - now I have to try to explain to them that positive thinking is an essential part of life but that it is a helpful guide not an answer to all life's issues good or bad.

my child has been shown a ton of disney movies at pima butte this year. not one permission slip was sent home. nor was one needed in my opinion.
if the teacher feels a movie is appropriate to be shown, perhaps to complete a lesson/supplement a lesson, replace a missed recess or whatever, fine by me.

i would imagine that a teacher must run a movie like the secret by the principal before it's shown.

why don't you start with the teacher or principal?

"Just a girl"

I agree for every 100 permission slips sent home it drives me nuts - Polar Express, Disney - of course I sign yes LOL. And yes we contacted the school this morning and the teacher had never run it past them - nor is that movie to be played there according to them. This movie had nothing to do with math and with finals coming up I think they have more important things to do during classtime. Again I just wanted to let other parents know that something was going on that they were unaware of yesterday.

Well I was not sure of what the move said but I can tell you that your child is going to learn alot from diffrent people including teachers that you may not agree with but that is life. Maybe it is good for some of these kids to have a positive outlook. Some kids have it pretty ruff and maybe showing the video helped a couple and gave the others a much needed break in math class. I would not agree with any video about religion shown in school however it sounds like this had nothing to do about religion.

Schools are not required to send home permission slips as long as the movie is rated "G". Obviously they aren't allowed to mix religion and state but thats another issue.

I would like to learn more about the fact that children aren't allowed to pray over their lunches. Have you seen the prayer police hovering in the cafeteria looking for bowed heads? Maybe you are upset, but come on.

i do understand what you are saying about having to explain to your child why their "positive thinking" didn't help heal his grandmother's cancer. i have a very tender hearted child, and i could see how that may be hard for you to explain. it would be hard for me to explain to my daughter as well. even before the secret, years and years ago, i thought if i had only prayed a little more or thought better thoughts, i could have helped my grandma overcome her sickness. i was sadly disappointed, but learned it wasn't about anything i did or didn't do.
even though i may not have choosen that particular movie for my child to watch, maybe it's a blessing in disguise. at least it opened up a dialog between you and your son that maybe wouldn't have taken place had he not seen the movie. my sister keeps her children in a bubble and trys so hard to "protect" them from everything worldly. but in the end, i think they have so many more questions and they are more confused than if my sis would just be honest and open them up to the world a bit more. the kids look for the answers elsewhere from friends, who at their age, just don't know the answers! as a parent, i'd much rather have my children want to ask me about information they've been given, wherever it may have come from. i guess my point is that it's ok for our children to be shown and taught things that we may not always agree with, but again, it can open up coverstations that we may otherwise not have had. as long as it's not hurtful or offensive or sexual material, i guess i see nothing wrong with showing the secret at school. i'm not trying to say you keep your child in a bubble or anything b/c you were upset about this particular showing. but he is going to be exposed to many many things you don't agree with in his life. if you get upset everytime you don't agree with it, it's just going to show him that he can't be open minded.

we finally voted in a smart president!

if kids want to pray before they eat there is nothing stopping them, but they have to do it silently to themselves, it cannot be an organized lead prayer. as for the movie, it will not change your child in the long run, children will learn more from their parents than a movie, so teach your children well and do not put it all on the school.

Well said everyone! Parents have the over all affect on children not one movie. It taked a lifetime to learn things, just talk with your children and maybe let them decide waht to belive in.
