04/13/2008 11:14 PM Alert

I was having a conversation with a teenager and she was telling me that a girl commented on her black nail polish and asked her if she was an Emo now and then asked to see her wrists. (For those of you who don't know what an Emo is, it is generally the kids you see that are dressed in tight pants, t-shirts, lots of black, usually with dark very layered hair and heavy eyeliner.)

I was shocked when she told me that at school it is known that the kids called "Emos" are cutters. She said they might have scars on their wrists or it might be hidden on other places of their body. Of course I have heard of kids cutting themselves but I have never heard that cutting was a part of being Emo. When I asked her "if they just dress like that but don't cut themselves are they still considered Emo" she told me "no they would be punk."

I don't know how true this is, but I was wondering if other people have heard this also? I don't think there is anything wrong with kids finding their own personal style, but if there is any truth to it maybe parents can just be aware to watch out for their kids and make sure they aren't hurting themselves!

Those kids used to be called "goth" in the 80's. It's really nothing new at all. Most of them grow out of that phase and start listening to better music and trade in their razor blades for a job at the mall.
Emo is short for Emo-tional. As far as cutting,I don't think it's a requirement for being emo. Just being depressed and wanting to kill yourself is.

Well, the Emo crowd thinks they're different, just like everyone else.

Kids seem to be going to the extreme, just to get a little attention.

I find this whole Emo thing comical. I did the same things when I was a teen. Dressing in as much black as I could with my Seton uniform. Please! It is just a fad, a way for the kids to freak out their parents. Plus, lets face it, teens are just stupid. They have so many chemicals running through their empty little heads from puberty.
