Good luck. Orbitel was never able to resolve my speed and latency issues. Probably a problem with their network.

Jason,  Are you using DSL?

Yep. 7Mbps Qwest ADSL. It's not perfect, but it's a lot better than Orbitel was.

One thing I've found with Orbitel is that their DNS server sucks.. It stops serving every so often, and is horribly slow. They also filter it, which is also bad.. This doesn't affect peoples transfer speed, but may affect the perceived speed of web pages loading... And when its dead, webpages just won't come up...

DNS is what converts the web addresses like www.amazon.com to IP addresses.. If you think of DNS as a phonebook, where you look up someone's name to get a phone number, you wouldn't be far off..

I ended up setting up a DNS proxy that talks to an outside DNS service that I have.. I had to force everything over TCP because of Orbitel's filtering..

In the words of Jessica Simpson "I have no idea what you're talking about, but I want it"       Just kidding!  Thanks for trying to educate the technologically challenged, but I think I'm hopeless!!

This is why I have memorized over 10,000 IP addresses.  I just punch in the IP address of any website.  No need for their DNS servers.

I think this is a bit over my head as well. But let me ask you what did the whole system set up cost? I am a bit frustrated and other options look better by the day.

I've tested mine using speakeasy several times today.  I'm averaging about 5 megs down and 750 kbps up.  I can live with these speeds if only they will last!

It was a free for me. I run a Linux server at home, and I used the "pdnsd" app to handle the DNS proxying. I pointed it to use OpenDNS's servers, and forced everything over TCP to get around Orbitel's filtering. You will also have to correctly setup your DHCP service to use the pdnsd app. Not for the faint of heart.

It adds a layer of indirection, and in some cases slower, but its far more reliable than Orbitel's solution.

(Note that Orbitel's filtering does not affect 99.9% of their users, only if you trying to directly query outside DNS servers, which most people do not.. If you don't understand what I'm talking about, its very unlikely that the filtering affects you.. I mainly do it becuase I was tired of their DNS being down on occasion..)

If it doesn't last, I'll not settle for 5 megs next time I call them.  I won't settle for anything less than the full 8 megs they're now advertising.

Yes.. Doing some dig's to some servers I control shows me that anything going UDP is getting intercepted and forced to some other server. Still reports as the specified server the responder, even though i know for a fact the data is wrong. Adding the +tcp switch to the dig shows me the correct data.

Here's an example:

vale:~ garion$ dig 85239.test. @udns1.ultradns.net

And adding the +tcp:

vale:~ garion$ dig +tcp 85239.test. @udns1.ultradns.net

204.69.234.1 is a DNS server from Neustar UltraDNS.  A service that most large companies use to manage their internal or external DNS servers.  Some companies that use UltraDNS service is Overstock.com, Amazon, Petco and a lot of others.  Cox and other cable companies also use DNS to manage parked domains and redirect mistyped URL's.

Unfortunately some ISP's are now redirecting requests to IRC sites to one of their own servers which runs a bot removal script.

I'm showing Orbitels internal DNS servers are 209.55.5.10 and 209.55.5.11

I work for UltraDNS, I'm one of their main developers (which is why I was able to add that 85239.test zone into the system. Anyone with their own DNS server can do the same, if you query it directly). Smaller companies, individuals etc can also get accounts by signing up at the website. I only showed that as an example of how Orbitel is filtering. If you notice, the UDP reply -claims- to be from UltraDNS, but clearly is not. Only the TCP one returned the correct data.

I dont believe Orbitel trying to do the OpenDNS thing, and redirect you do some search webpage (which breaks various other internet applications), but I think they are trying to use it as caching. It doesn't break things for most people, but for me, because I have to test other DNS servers, it quite annoying.
