Alert | Well, after over 2 years of PERFECT service, our XBox 360 finally went terminal on us. Lower Right corner Red LED and an error code of E74. Called Microsoft and the repair fee is $99.00 which includes S/H and a 1 year warranty extension on the unit. I think this is a pretty good deal. A better deal would have been 3 Red Lights which was an automatic warranty extension to 3 years. But with the number of hours this unit got, I'm okay with $99.00.
It was an original unit by-the-way. Manufactured 10/20/05.
I did some research and (it appears) the E74 has just really started flooding the system. Many, many reports of heavy dots on screen followed by E74 and Red Ring at reboot. Looks like COD4 may be overloading the graphics circuitry.
If you are playing COD4 on an older unit....... Good Luck.

Alert | Buy a new Xbox360. Swap the old one for the new one. Return new box (with old xbox360 inside) for a refund. Make up something about how you bought it for someone's birthday and they got 2 or something. You have a new xbox360. The old one goes back to Bill Gates. Problem solved.
I would never advocate doing this, but I have 'heard' this works.

Alert | The only way that would work is through a store that doesn't record the serial number of the unit at the time of sale.
Still, $99 seems reasonable to repair an older system that is now broken. | | Joined: Jul 2005

The Xbox exceeded it's useful life as expected by Microsoft and the original purchaser. Forcing Microsoft to give you a new Xbox through dishonest means is stealing from them. | | Joined: Jul 2005

Alert | There is actually a really easy solution to all of this.
I experienced 2 RROD Xbox 360's. The first one came back and was fine. The second was as loud as a 747 and the case was cracked. A craigslist ad later, it became someone else's problem, and I had enough cash to buy a brand new PS3. It was the best move. The PS3 is a great machine and Blu Ray player, web browser, no batteries for the wireless controller, great media extender, quiet, and hands down a better system. The only thing I miss is Xbox Live, but at least my PS3 works. The 360 is a piece of crap.

Alert | | I just sent my 2 year old unit in with the ring of death. This is the 2nd time for me. I am going to trade mine in at gamestop for a new one when it comes back. The new units have a new falcon chipset that is supposed to eliminate the over heating problem.

IMO, there is no better media extender available (until they release dedicated Media Center Extenders). I also hated having to have the PS3 on to charge the controllers. What a waste. And it wasn't as quiet as everyone touted, I could easily hear the fan over many things, such as talking scenes in movies and the Motorstorm game. The fan was quieter than the Xbox to be sure, but I wouldn't use it as a Blu-ray player. Maybe it was broken, who knows? Just too many downsides for me. | | Joined: Jul 2005

Alert | | do u have the ps3 in an enclosed area? i have a charger i plug into the wall that charges my ps3 controllers, so the PS3 doesnt have to be on. whether u buy a better charging devise or not is up to you. why wouldnt u use it as a bluray player? i guess you want to use the HDDVD add on the 360 has, oh wait there really isnt many good movies on that soon to be dead HDDVD format. 360 is alright, but doesnt compare to the PS3. this yr the PS3 pulls away especially in the states, outside of NA the 360 doesnt do nearly as well | | listened for, they cannot be heard;looked for, they cannot be seen; felt for, they cannot be touched: old ninja proverb

Alert | | Yeah, you're right, I'm sure there are chargers for the controllers. Nope, didn't use it in an enclosed area. I wouldn't use it because it was too noisy. But then I wouldn't use Blu-ray yet because there is nothing except the PS3 that can support the new profile coming out this year and well, the PS3 is too noisy (for me). | | Joined: Jul 2005
